Friends has remained a hit with today's generations, as much as it was when it first came out. The 6 main characters have lives that almost everyone can relate to in some way, whether it's about family, work, or relationships.
Their defining traits differ, with Joey's most prominent personality feature being his loyalty. Although he's funny and dim-witted, with one of Friends most iconic quotes "how you doin'?" the commitment to people he loves most doesn't go unnoticed, as he produces quotes that prove just how loyal he really is.
Complicated Relationships
"Now Go! Because You Can Still Catch Her!"
Joey is the 'player' of the group. He jumps from one woman to another, often in 'no strings attached' agreements. However, when he meets Kathy, he opens his heart and commits to their relationship. Unfortunately, Kathy's head is turned by none other than Chandler, deeply hurting Joey.
The friends fall out and Joey wants Chandler to make up for it by quietly thinking about his actions alone in a box. Upon seeing the sadness in Kathy as she tells Chandler they shouldn't see each other anymore because of what its done to his and Joey's relationship, Joey tells him to go after her. For some pals, getting over a betrayal like that would be too hard, but Joey wants the best for his friends, even if it means putting his feelings last.
Jellyfish Stings
"If I Had To, I'd Pee On Any One Of You."
It truly is an irable trait to be a loyal friend. But, it would probably be a fair guess to suggest that not many would be willing to pee on each other, no matter how good their friendship may be. For a while, Monica and Joey try to keep their beach secret on the down low, but it eventually comes spilling out.
After Monica got herself into a sticky situation by getting stung by a jelly fish, Joey peed on her to help the pain ease. Although kind of gross, in Joey's defence, he really stepped up for Monica and as he said, he'd do it for any one of the others.
David Lynn
"Who Is This Guy?! Who Is He? Cos I Will Track Him Down And Kick His Ass!"
Phoebe pretends to be pregnant for a while, covering for Rachel's own pregnancy as she tries to figure out how to tell Ross. As is a common occurrence with Phoebe, she manages to conjure up a colorful backstory, telling Joey that the father of the child wants nothing to do with the baby.
Furious at the idea a man wouldn't commit to his friend, he asks Phoebe who the man is, to which she gives the name 'David Lynn.' Without any more information, he storms off in search of this man, with no idea who he is confronting. When it comes to his friends, no enemy is too big for him to fight!
Getting To Know Janice
"We Went To A Mets Game, We Got Chinese Food. And, You Know, I Love This Woman."
Chandlers on-off relationship with Janice (a side character with main character energy from Friends,) is somewhat exhausting to his friends (and the viewers!). The two are plainly not suited, yet they keep running back to each other. Although pretty harmless, Janice is undeniably annoying and Joey knows it. In an attempt to please Chandler, Joey loyally puts on a brave face and commits to a day out with Janice.
They do various things together and after he arrives back, he tries to convince Chandler that he thinks Janice is great even though he just can't stand her, because he wants to do right by his close buddy.
Encouraging Chats
"You Can't Just Give Up! Is That What A Dinosaur Would Do?!"
Joey isn't blessed with academia and general knowledge, but it doesn't stop him from showing an interest in the intellectual things his friends are involved in. Ross confides in Phoebe and Joey after learning Rachel is leaving to live in . Both Phoebe and Joey think that Ross should tell Rachel exactly how he feels, so he has the best chance of being with her.
Joey's outburst of encouragement is very sweet, as he tries to boost Ross with the mention of dinosaurs, something that Joey has no clue about. However, in Joey's mind, it might be an added bit of .
Friends Before Feelings
"About Rachel And I. Listen, You Don't Have To Worry About That, Because Nothing's Gonna Happen."
Ross and Rachel are a rollercoaster relationship from the start of the series. For years, they tried to make things work, until it seemingly was hopeless. Way down the line, Joey and Rachel find love for each other, news that Ross doesn't take too kindly to.
After seeing the emotions Ross goes through at the prospect of Rachel being with Joey, he selflessly tells Ross that he will take a step back from the person he loves because Ross shouldn't have to feel bad about it.
Bad Recipe
"What's Not To Like? Custard: Good! Jam: Good! Meat: Good!"
Rachel attempts to make a trifle for her friends and Monica's parents. Unfortunately, her skills in the kitchen are few and far between, with very little understanding of a classic dessert dish, such as a trifle. In the excitement of making the food, pages of the recipe book get stuck together, resulting in the meal being half trifle and half shepherd's pie.
The rest of the group can't stomach the awful concoction, but you can always rely on Joey to finish a plate of food. He has no hesitation in polishing off the shepherd's pie-trifle, saving Rachel's feelings.
Sibling Solidarity
"Now You Can Punch Him."
It's not just his friends that Joey remains loyal to. His family is a big part of his life and he won't let anyone hurt them. Chandler finds himself caught up with one of Joey's sisters, but he can't which one and therefore ends up kissing another of the sisters because he thinks they all look really similar.
Joey is truly disheartened but finds Chandler's apology enough for him to forgive. That is until he still can't which sister is Mary-Angela. Joey then tells his other sister that she can now punch him. Joey is fair and willing to give people a chance, but mess with his family too much and you'll be on the receiving end of his anger.
Costume Wedding
"I Cannot Imagine Two People More Perfect For Each Other."
Chandler and Monica's wedding was one of the most romantic scenes in Friends and Joey takes on the role of marrying the couple. Just as little else ever runs smoothly, Joey has a part in a film on the day of the wedding, and filming goes on for longer than he wanted. Another actor has turned up to set drunk, making it impossible to get through the lines.
However, Joey manages to make it to the ceremony on time, marching down the aisle to take up his position, still in full costume as a soldier. Joey put his pride to one side because he made a promise to Monica and Chandler that he wasn't going to break.
Secret Affairs
"I'm Joey. I'm Disgusting."
Joey finds out that Monica and Chandler are seeing each other, whilst the rest of the group are none the wiser. The pair beg him to not tell the others and even cover up for them when their secret almost comes out.
On several occasions, he had to step up and take the blame for some gross things, that sometimes made him look like some kind of a sick sex pest. But still, he remained true to Monica and Chandler, battling through the accusations he didn't deserve, simply because he is a wonderful friend.
