Superheroes have been working non-stop since their first appearance in comic book pages, and at some point, some of them have made the jump from the pages to the small screen. Back in the 1970s, Hanna-Barbera took some of DC’s Justice League of America characters and gave us the animated series Super Friends.
The series ran from 1973 to 1986 and throughout these years the name was variously represented – as well as the team – such as The All-New Super Friends Hour and Challenge of the Super Friends. However, the core group of Super Friends remained the same: Friends.
Leave it to Nerdist to make this animated crossover a reality by giving each Friends character a superhero identity and the powers that come with it. Best of all, the video references some memorable moments from the beloved sitcom. Starting with Joey, the equivalent of Superman, who uses his X-ray vision to make even clearer that (indeed!) “Joey doesn’t share food!”
Rachel is the group’s Wonder Woman, who gives the lasso of truth a new use by sending Gunther far, far away from Earth. Then comes Chandler as Batman, working at his batcave on that infamous list of pros and cons between Rachel and Ross’ then-girlfriend Julie – oh, and smoking. Next up is Phoebe, the equivalent of Aquaman, using her musical talents to gather all the smelly cats in the city. Last but not least, Monica and Ross as the Wonder Twins (Zan and Jayna), ed by Marcel, the monkey.
Their mission is simple but not a noble one: obsess over each other’s personal lives, constantly insult each other, and alienate the rest of mankind. Exactly what happened in the series, but with superpowers and colourful costumes.
Friends ran from 1994 to 2004 and is one of the most popular and beloved sitcoms of all-time. It followed the lives of six New York based friends as they go through romance, loss, career issues, and everything else that comes with being an adult. Or, in a raw and more in-your-face way as Nerdist did on their video, “the six more self-absorbed friends” who are all about each others lives (and their own, of course).
This version of Super Friends is fun to imagine but wouldn’t be a good idea if you think about it: picture the disaster of Joey’s dates if he had all those superpowers or how chaotic Phoebe’s life would be with all the smelly cats around her. Although maybe Chandler could really use some of Batman’s abilities and expertise, not only in his personal life, but also at his job – whatever it was.
