Like From, The Leftovers Is Another Acclaimed Supernatural Mystery Show From The Minds Behind Lost

The Leftovers & From are both critically acclaimed mysteries from creatives who previously worked on Lost

Also often described as one of the greatest TV shows of all time, HBO’s The Leftovers is another sci-fi/mystery drama series with a concept somewhat similar to From. Debuting on HBO in 2014, The Leftovers ended after three seasons as it followed groups of characters in the aftermath of a disastrous event known as the “Sudden Departure,” which saw 2% of Earth’s population inexplicably vanish on October 14, 2011. The first season followed the Garvey family, Nora Durst and her brother Matt, and of the Guilty Remnant cult in a small New York town before moving the characters to Texas in season 2 and Australia in season 3.

From Christopher Eccelstone to Liv Tyler, The Leftovers was a show that had had some talented stars. But who else was part of roster?

Similar to From, HBO’s The Leftovers’ primary character was the town’s chief of police and dealt with themes of the supernatural, existential philosophies, mortality, and purpose, all of which center around an unexplained supernatural occurrence. However, The Leftovers and From’s similarities shouldn’t be too surprising, as they both come from creative minds behind the hit sci-fi mystery TV show Lost. The Leftovers was made by Lost co-creator and showrunner Damon Lindelof, while From is executive produced by Lost’s producers, director, and writer Jack Bender and Jeff Pinkner.

Why The Leftovers Ended After Season 3 (Despite Great Reviews)

The Leftovers' story came to a natural end

Despite the fact that The Leftovers garnered a 91% critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes and a 90% audience score, the show ended after three seasons. In most cases, this might imply that the show turned sour and was canceled or simply got worse, however that isn't necessarily the case for The Leftovers. In reality, it was a collective decision based on where the story was going. In an interview at the Peabody Awards in 2016, as reported by Entertainment Weekly, showrunner Damon Lindelof revealed that the story felt like it was coming to a natural end.

"I feel like television shows should have beginnings, middles, and ends," Lindelof said in the interview. "As we were getting to the end of the second season of the show, it started feeling to all of us that these characters were closer to their end than their beginning." In this way, The Leftovers did not end due to any bad blood or a decrease in quality.

It simply came to a point where it felt like the end was near, and as Lindelof said, it was the type of television series that had a definitive beginning, middle, and end.
