MGM+'s hit horror series, From premiered its very first season to strong critical acclaim. The series takes place in a nightmarish American town, where residents must fight for their lives against horrifying nocturnal creatures. In particular, From centers on Boyd Stevens, the de-facto mayor, and the Matthews, a family of new arrivals who discover they are now trapped in this town for good.

A solid series to start with while waiting for From season 4 is The Rain. This Danish TV show takes place in a futuristic landscape where a rain-carried virus has wiped out almost all of humanity. Six years later, two siblings decide to leave the safety of their bunker to see what the decimated Earth has to hold. In their search for survivors, they come face-to-face with the reality that the world as they knew it is gone, but also, that some elements of society continue to have an effect on them.

The Rain may have a different premise than From, but the shows share very similar DNA. Just like the Matthews family, The Rain's sibling protagonists must quickly learn what they are facing in this new world. All hopes of safety are gone. Furthermore, there is a strong sense of community in the face of danger in both series. Most importantly, though, watching The Rain will leave audiences with as many burning questions as From does.

5 1899 (2022)

Immigrants On A Ship Get Caught In A Mystery

For those seeking a shorter, one-season commitment, a great choice would be 1899. Released on Netflix in 2022, this series centers on a steamship carrying immigrants from London to New York. Their travels are going smoothly until they run into another ship, drifting mysteriously in the open sea. Suddenly, individuals of all different ages and backgrounds must work together to try and figure out what they have stumbled upon.

1899 is a strong companion to From because of its differences. For example, 1899 does not take place in a small American town, but on a steamship full of strangers. Furthermore, the series is set at the turn of the century, giving it historical significance within the greater mystery. These details make 1899 immersive and exciting, but like From, the show still offers viewers a riveting mystery and plenty of bleak, spooky imagery.

4 3 Body Problem (2024)

Scientists Try To Unravel A Deadly Mystery

One Netflix series that has garnered a lot of hype since its 2024 release is 3 Body Problem. Based on a series of sci-fi novels by Liu Cixin, this show follows dual timelines wherein a young Chinese woman is recruited for a top-secret scientific experiment in the 1960s and a group of friends in the present day try to figure out what is happening to their colleagues, who are systematically dying without a known cause. The series was created by Game of Thrones showrunners, David Benioff and D. B. Weiss.

3 Body Problem season 2 is also set to release in 2026.

To be fair, 3 Body Problem's story may be a bit more complex than that of From, but the shows certainly go hand in hand. Both focus on intense mystery elements, and include dark forces that result in gruesome character deaths. Furthermore, there is a sense of camaraderie between 3 Body Problem's Oxford Five, in the same way that From's citizens band together. Ultimately, 3 Body Problem is ideal for those who love complex conspiracies mixed with science fiction.

3 Lost (2004)

A Plane Crashes On A Strange Island

With so much time to kill before From season 4, viewers may be willing to binge a much longer series, and if this is the case, the best option is to watch Lost. Currently streaming all six seasons on Netflix, Lost is a classic mystery series that follows Oceanic Flight 815, which crashes on a deserted island. The survivors each harbor their own dark secrets, which they must hide from each other. However, these eventually become secondary to the secrets held by the island itself.

There's a reason why Lost is one of the most popular and beloved TV series of this generation. Showrunner J.J. Abrams infused every episode with intense twists and surprises that kept viewers locked in from start to finish. 2 Midnight Mass (2021)

It would be a shame to list Netflix horror/mystery shows and not include one of Mike Flanagan's beloved projects. The one that is eerily similar to From is Midnight Mass. This limited series is about a young man who returns to his small hometown, Crockett's Island, hoping to restart his life after serving four years in prison. However, his arrival coincides with that of a charming priest who begins reviving the island's lost faith. A series of strange occurrences imply that this priest is not as good as he appears to be.

If From's small town atmosphere is a big part of why you like the series, then Midnight Mass is a fantastic show to pick up. The horror series is all about small towns and the unique divisions that come between people who should all hypothetically want the same thing. On top of that, Midnight Mass is probably the most horror-centric series on this list, as Flanagan is well-known for his jump scares and gory storytelling. Its shadowy atmosphere is a must for horror lovers.

1 Dark (2017)

Two Children Disappear In A Secretive Town

Finally, one of Netflix's very best mystery series is a 2017 German show called Dark. It takes place in a small town where the disappearance of two children pulls up a number of horrifying secrets, specifically about four families within the town. Across time and space, audiences see how this seemingly innocuous town is filled with danger, history, and unlikely connections.

Though this description may seem vague, that is sort of the point. Dark is the type of show that is best to go into without knowing too much, so that the twists can truly take you by surprise. Like From, Dark has a focus on small towns and the complicated relationships between families. Furthermore, the show plays with time, identity, and power structures. All in all, Dark is a perfect follow-up for those patiently awaiting From season 4.
