DJ Tanner is certainly one of the main faces of Fuller House. She is usually a good kid, she loves her family, and she is a comfort to those in her presence.
As great as young DJ is, there are some things about her characterization that just make no sense. From DJ's childhood to the teenage years, these questions are fun for hardcore fans to ponder. Eight seasons is a long time to get to know a character, so here are 10 puzzling pieces of DJ's life.
Her School
School is a sizable part of DJ and Stephanie's storylines (and later, Michelle's). DJ advances to a gifted group in fifth grade, she dresses just like a teacher in junior high, and she is the belle of the prom in high school.
Though she experiences many significant life events that are attached to school, the series doesn't show DJ actually at school too often. This is not so strange since it is a family sitcom and not a teen saga, but DJ and Kimmy being at school a bit more would offer a greater context for their trials.
Her Love Life
At the end of Full House and throughout all of Fuller House, DJ is the object of more than one man's affections. Some would argue that the break-up with Steve alone makes no sense, but the bigger conundrum lies in DJ's other relationships.
She goes through ups and downs with schoolgirl crushes, but she also has some issues as an older teen. DJ goes after an intellectual and a junior rocker (from Jesse's band) at the same time. With so many paths to choose from, her relationship choices just don't always add up.
Her Goals
DJ is a veterinarian on Fuller House, but little from Full House foreshadows the career. DJ enjoys taking care of her golden retriever, Comet, and she is kind to other animals.
Maybe that was enough to make the leap to the vet. Maybe not. It would have been helpful to hear DJ outline some of her larger life goals while she was on Full House.
Her Emotions
Tween and teen years are messy. DJ has every right to express herself uniquely as she goes through necessary changes.
On the other hand, she can be pretty harsh in the way that she deals with her emotions. She occasionally freezes people out, disrespects both adults and kids, and takes a long time to accept other points of view.
Her Childhood
DJ is lost her mother. She has sweet memories from time to time as the show goes on, but she doesn't get too many opportunities to reflect on the years before her mother ed away.
A sitcom isn't exactly the place to discuss death ad nauseam, but a few more details from the beginning of her childhood would have been interesting.
Her Jobs
Once she hits her teen years, DJ realizes that she wants some spending money. She babysits and works briefly as a photographer's assistant, but nothing really sticks.
It doesn't make much sense for Danny to enforce a rule that DJ work for her fun money if she only works in a handful of episodes. The Tanners clearly lack nothing in the way of food, clothing, shelter, and entertainment.
Her Room Situation
DJ pitches a fit and makes a presentation in order to get her own room as a teen. A hyper-organized, Type-A kid might do the same, but it wasn't really necessary in DJ's case.
Joey could have kept living downstairs with the recording equipment (kind of like Stephanie's first setup on Fuller House). That way, Jesse and Becky could still enjoy the attic apartment, but all three girls could go back to having their own bedrooms on the second floor.
Her Technology
DJ is young during a great decade. By the time she is in high school, she is privileged enough to have her own computer (no cell phones for the masses, yet). Some viewers get a thrill just from watching the old technology in shows from the 90s.
Unfortunately, DJ's computer never figures into a major plot. It would have been scintillating to see how much that old PC could do.
Her Hair
DJ's hair is an ever-changing experiment. She looks great and her hair is fabulous from childhood to her senior prom. Here's what doesn't make sense: DJ might just have the best hair in the Tanner household, but it is referenced very seldom.
Jesse Katsopolis seems to have a monopoly on hair flex. This is probably a good thing - DJ has a lot going for her, and a hair obsession could be distracting.
Her Friends
DJ has a great friend in Kimmy Gibbler. She has a decent boyfriend in Steve Hale. What DJ doesn't have is a huge circle of friends.
Her middle school and high school group changes a few times, and secondary friends aren't included in many episodes. At least there's always Kathy Santoni.
