Filming is already underway for Bob Saget as Danny Tannera, and Lori Loughlin as Rebecca Donaldson Katsopolis.
Two notable names have been missing from the line-up thus far, though; Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. The pair played the part of the youngest Tanner daughter, Michelle, from 1987 through 1995 and established themselves as a firm fan favorite. Since then, they have enjoyed a huge TV career before branching out into the fashion industry, and they have not appeared on screen together in a movie or TV show since 2004. As a result, the Olsen twins declined the chance to be part of Fuller House, which was confirmed by executive producer Robert L. Boyett in May 2015.
However, with the commencement of filming comes new discussion surrounding the possible return of Michelle Tanner after all. Speaking at the 2015 Television Critics Association press tour, head of acquisition for Netflix, Ted Sarandos teased that the Olsen twins may yet appear on Fuller House:
"The Olsen twins are teetering on whether or not they'll be around ... We've been able to reassemble all of the [rest of the] cast."
While his words certainly don’t confirm their involvement, it is the nearest they have come to being involved so far. However, Sarandos also added that the twins are “not in the current creative,” meaning they are not written into the show, but that doesn’t mean that Fuller House scripts and storylines can’t be altered if the pair do change their minds.
The Olsens previously issued a public statement claiming they an open effort to court the pair and convince them otherwise. Stamos thereafter posted a short statement on his Facebook page, explaining he understood they are in a different place. At the time, it seemed as the Olsens thought the cast were possibly just reuniting for money. Maybe they have now seen just how much the cast are enjoying working on this reboot, and how much excitement the fans have surrounding it?
With Fuller House filming already taking place, and no official confirmation, it seems as though if the Olsens do reprise the role of Michelle it will only be for a brief cameo appearance (rather than a full story arc), recalling how certain Boy Meets World characters have popped up on the sequel series, Girl Meets World. Even so, it will be a welcome addition given that the entire original cast are otherwise on board.
Fuller House will air on Netflix in 2016.
