, Calvin and Hobbes, and Peanuts, The Far Side has different characters starring in each comic. Sure, there might be running gags (like comics with dinosaurs or trees), but as far as an actual main, marketable character is concerned, The Far Side has none to speak of.

While one might assume The Far Side can bring fans gags centered around some decidedly bizarre characters, including literal babies. Here are 10 of the funniest Far Side comics starring babies!

10 The Far Side Somehow Makes the Impending Doom of a Baby Hilarious

A baby about to get eaten by ants in The Far Side.

A colony of ants is carrying a human baby toward their ant hill, but the leader of the ants shouts at the drones, telling them that the infant won't fit through the hole, making their efforts futile. Meanwhile, the baby is blissfully unaware of what's about to happen to them, staring off into space with a little smile on their face. The entire scene is utterly hilarious, even considering the horrific implications.

The ants obviously intended to eat the infant, which is unspeakable to say the least. Luckily, the ants were thwarted by the baby's sheer size, meaning the infant's life was spared, and they weren't even aware that their life was in danger to begin with. This is peak dark comedy, as it somehow makes the impending doom of a baby hilarious.

9 The Far Side Puts a Horrific Twist on a ‘Fair Trade’

A chicken stealing the farmer's baby in The Far Side.

When a woman is walking back to her house from her chicken coop with a basket of eggs in-hand, she notices a chicken walking back to the coop with her infant in hand. It seems the chickens got sick of the woman continuously stealing their eggs, so they decided to take the 'human equivalent' - that being the woman's child. While eggs aren't exactly the same thing as a fully developed child, it seems the chickens found it a fair enough trade, which is honestly pretty horrific.

It's as if the chickens don't know the difference between a fertilized and an unfertilized egg. So, every egg they lay, they see as a baby chick, which alone is incredibly tragic. Of course, the whole scene is utterly absurd, making this otherwise tragic moment pretty hysterical.

8 1 Far Side Snake Suffers the Hilarious Consequences of Its Horrific Actions

A snake trapped in a play pen after eating a baby in The Far Side.

After a snake slithers into a baby's room, it eats the child while they're playing in their play pen. Consequently, when the snake tries to slither away, it's unable to fit through the bars of the play pen, as the baby inside it is keeping the snake from leaving. The snake got a big meal, but because of that, its belly became the same size as the baby the play pen was designed to keep contained, forcing the snake to suffer the hilarious consequences of its horrific actions.

While the baby's death is sad, at least the snake will assuredly pay for what it's done. Since it's stuck in the play pen, the child's parents will find the snake there, and most certainly kill it on the spot. Hopefully, the snake enjoyed that meal, because it was definitely its last.

7 The Far Side Turns Newborns Into Alligator Snacks

Nurses shooing a baby-eating alligator from the nursery in The Far Side.

Two nurses are shooing an alligator out of their hospital's nursery as casually as if they were shooing it out of an empty parking lot, before one nurse turns to the other and tells her to recount the babies, just in case the alligator ate one or two of them. While most of the babies are safe in their bassinets, one bassinet is empty, implying that the alligator turned at least one newborn into a snack - and it barely seems like the nurses care at all.

The entire scene is unquestionably bizarre, like a weird nightmare where an alligator can eat babies at a hospital, and then just leave, with the nurses barely paying it any mind at all. The Far Side is known for absurd and strange humor, and this one certainly fits that bill.

6 This Far Side Baby Received Some (Gross) Extra Food from Local Birds

A baby getting fed worms by a couple of birds in The Far Side.

When a mother takes her baby to a local park to read a book while her child enjoys some fresh air in their stroller, she certainly didn't expect her baby to have a decidedly strange encounter with some local birds. These birds sit perched on the baby's stroller, talking to each other about how they've already fed this baby a ton of worms, yet the child still seems to be hungry.

While it's pretty gross to imagine a baby getting fed worms by a couple of weird birds, that baby certainly doesn't seem to mind. In fact, as far as the baby's concerned, they're just getting some extra food that day, and the smile on the infant's face proves that they're enjoying every minute of this strange bird encounter - one that's so absurd, readers can't help but laugh.

Pilots flying giant babies in The Far Side.

In one of the most visually bizarre Far Side comics, two pilots are sitting on the head of a giant baby, with other giant babies flying around in the background. The pilots are checking the fuel, the lights, and the oil pressure before saying one line that makes this entire weird comic suddenly make sense, "let's get this baby off the ground".

Calling an object "baby" - including but not limited to an airplane - is a widely popular figure of speech. It's well within the realm of possibility that a pilot would say, "let's get this baby off the ground" to signify that everything looks good, and they're ready for takeoff, just like the pilot in this comic. The difference, however, is that The Far Side took that figure of speech hilariously literally.

4 The Far Side Focuses on the Wrong Thing in This Baby Joke

Two men looking at a baby in a bottle in The Far Side.

Two men are standing by the fireplace inside one of their homes, and sitting on the mantle (in truly horrific fashion) is a baby in a bottle. One of the men is showing it off to his friend as if it were a ship in a bottle, bragging about how he only paid five dollars for it, and that included the stand.

These two men (or, at least the one talking) are totally focusing on the wrong thing here. The question isn't how much this baby in a bottle cost, or what accessories came with it, but why - for the love of all that is holy - is there a baby in a bottle sitting on this man's mantle? It's a despicable display, saved only by the dark humor that comes with this strangely sinister Far Side joke.

3 The Far Side Gives New Parents Even MORE to be Stressed About

A man using newborns to conduct static electricity in The Far Side.

A man named Reuben is shown sneaking into a nursery late at night, apparently conducting "experiments in static electricity". Readers can see this man rubbing the babies on his shirt as one would do to a balloon in order to generate static electricity, and then releasing the babies to stick to the ceiling. While the visual is funny, the implications are utterly horrific.

The Far Side makes it clear that Reuben is conducting these experiments without the hospital's permission, and he has no qualms ing newborns to conduct his weird experiments. That's a pretty terrifying thought for a new parent, whose newborn baby is resting in this particular nursery. Makes one think that freaks like Reuben could be lurking in any nursery, giving parents even more to be stressed about (albeit in the most cartoonish way possible).

2 The Far Side Makes Light of a Real-World Tragedy

A nursery and a dingo farm located right next to each other in The Far Side.

In a Far Side comic morbidly titled, "Trouble Brewing", readers see a nursery called "Doreen's Nursery" right next to another business called "Ed's Dingo Farm". While this may seem innocent enough, this is an insanely dark joke referencing a real-world tragedy that happened back in the '80s.

In the death of Azaria Chamberlain case, the mother of the deceased baby, Lindy Chamberlain-Creighton, famously claimed that a dingo ate her baby when she and her then-husband were accused - and ultimately convicted - of murder. However, when Azaria Chamberlain's body was located, authorities discovered that the mother wasn't lying, and that a dingo actually had killed Azaria. It's a heartbreaking story that has gotten a lot of attention over the years, including in this Far Side comic.

1 The Far Side Comes Up with a Hilarious New Name for ‘Babies’

Two crabs judging babies playing at the beach in The Far Side.

As two babies play in the sand at the beach, they're being watched by two crabs, who are very wary of these little humans. As they're watching, pointing out their peculiarities, one of the crabs says to the other one, "Yes. ...they're quite strange during their larval stage." While it's funny enough to consider that crabs are secretly judging people at the beach, this Far Side comic also gives readers a hilarious alternative to 'baby'.

Calling babies 'larval humans' seems like an edgy trend one would see on Tumblr circa 2012, but it would have started in this very Far Side comic, and the thought of that is absolutely hysterical. That's what makes this one of the 10 funniest Far Side comics about babies.
