Warning! Spoilers ahead for Future State: Green Lantern #1- The Book of Guy from Ernie Altbacker and Clayton Henry
In DC's Green Lanterns and characters in the DC Universe, fate chose the blunt and stubborn Guy Gardner to unwittingly become a religious prophet to an entire alien civilization.
Guy's hilarious final fate is revealed in The Book of Guy, a short tale featured within Future State: Green Lantern #1 from writer Ernie Altbakcer with art by Clayton Henry. The tale begins with Guy having embarked on a usual run of the mill mission for the Green Lantern Corps, intervening in a dispute between two warring clans who are fighting over a piece of space debris they view as a holy relic. However, midway through his attempts to broker peace (something the impulsive brawler is not very good at), his Green Lantern ring fails him due to the destruction of the Central Power Battery.
The failure of Guy's ring leads to the Green Lantern being trapped on the primitive planet for a very long time with no way to call for help or leave. However, both rival clans see him as a prophet, and Guy doesn't dissuade them of this notion, using his new status to bring to two tribes together (while also enjoying the perks of leadership). After a year of living on the planet, Guy started to learn the basics of the clans' language. He also made a version of his Warriors bar in order to feel more at home. After 5 years, Guy was speaking the language of the clans with ease, solving several issues and likewise helping the clans advance their civilization. Hilariously, the Book of Guy was written in order memorialize all of Guy's "infinite wisdom" as the clans' prophet.
After 25 years of serving as The Prophet Guy, it seemed as though Guy Gardner has actually brought about lasting peace to the planet, against all odds. However, a younger member of the clan started speaking out against The Prophet Guy and his teachings, which led to an uproar. Not only that, but Lobo shows up at the end of the story, and the clans immediately view the Main Man as a new prophet to be revered, all while Guy laments about how close he was to actually bringing peace to the alien world.
Despite Guy's surprisingly well-intentioned efforts, the clans' attention spans were just too short and their loyalties too thin, ready to believe anything or anyone new that came along. While it had worked in Guy's favor for quite a long time, Lobo's arrival threw a massively comical wrench into the whole operation. Even so, it was pretty cool to see one of the most stubborn Green Lanterns who was always ready for a fight adopt an attitude of peace, even if it was in his own Guy Gardner way in the Future State issue from DC Comics.
