House of the Dragon, just around the corner, the body count of Westeros characters is surely set to increase.
Some of the deaths from the show see the most evil villains get their comeuppance in dramatic style, like with Joffrey and Ramsay. That being said, even fan-favorite characters such as Robb and Hodor aren't safe, and fans have been sharing memes about their deaths over the years.
The Red Wedding
During the show's third season, the infamous Red Wedding unfolds and a number of fan-favorite characters are brutally murdered. Robb and Catelyn are two of the most moral and just characters on the show, so to see them slaughtered in such a horrific way is traumatizing.
Catelyn's scream of horror as she watches her son die is difficult to forget even long after the scene is over. As Ned had already been viciously killed at the end of the first season, it's devastating for more of his family to be taken out in this way. Fans were left rocked by the brutality of this scene and it's still spoken about several years later.
Joffrey Baratheon
One of the most satisfying Game of Thrones deaths is Joffrey's in season 4. Joffrey has just married Margaery when he begins to choke during the wedding feast and it becomes clear he's been poisoned.
After inflicting misery on almost every other character he comes into with, very few people mourn his death. As the scene comes midway through the season, though, it is unexpected but still rewarding. The moment is celebrated by fans as Joffrey was integral in Ned's death and made Sansa's life hell in the seasons that followed.
Oberyn Martell
Oberyn is one of the best characters introduced after season 1, but he unfortunately only appears in one season of the show. When Tyrion is accused of murdering Joffrey, Oberyn agrees to represent him in a trial by combat.
As his fight with the Mountain progresses, he appears to have the upper hand and even begins to gloat. That being said, as soon as he lets his guard down, he is thrown to the ground and his head is crushed, making for a particularly gruesome death. Fans were hoping Oberyn would stick around and become a key character in the show going forward so to see him go so early into his tenure is disappointing.
Jon Snow
Jon is one of the most prominent characters on the show and arguably the main protagonist. However, at the end of the fifth season, he is betrayed by the Night's Watch, with each of them stabbing him and leaving him to bleed out on the ground.
Although he is later resurrected, the betrayal makes this scene even more difficult to watch. Many fans are particularly angry at the young boy, Olly who helped to kill Jon and had previously killed Ygritte. While he does manage to get his revenge following this, the death frustrates fans because of how committed Jon had been to the Watch.
Hodor
Hodor is a ing character in the show but he is still beloved by fans due to his kind nature. Throughout the show, he remains loyal to the Starks and helps Bran escape Winterfell.
When Bran and his party are pursued by White Walkers, he wargs into Hodor in order to hold the army back. In a surprise twist, as he is about to die and is told to 'hold the door' fans learn this is why he is called Hodor and why he repeats this throughout the show. Seeing the young Hodor as the present-day version of the character is killed makes this scene even more heartbreaking.
Ramsay Bolton
Similar to Joffrey, fans were eagerly awaiting Ramsay's death as he is one of the most evil characters in Game of Thrones. After finally escaping from Joffrey, Sansa finds herself in an even worse situation when she is forced to marry abusive Ramsay.
After killing her brother, Ramsay is finally defeated by Jon and his men and locked in a cell; Sansa then takes matters into her own hands when she sets his own starving dogs on him. After seeing him do this to several innocent people previously, it's a satisfying way for the character to go out. Fans are also elated to see Sansa get revenge on her ab as walks away from Ramsay being killed with a smile on her face.
Olenna Tyrell
Olenna became known for her iconic one-liners and savage put-downs and she makes sure her dying moments are no different. Upon realizing her death is imminent, she tells Jaimie that she was responsible for his son, Joffrey's death and then utters the famous line: 'Tell Cersei, I want her to know it was me."
Although it's a shame to lose such a watchable ing character, her final moments almost make it worth it. As Cersei had murdered the rest of Olenna's family, it's almost comical to see her deliver a final blow before she's taken out. While the actual death doesn't occur on-screen, the closing line makes it one of the most memorable.
The Night King
One of the main threats to Westeros throughout the show is the Night King, leader of the undead Walker army. Jon faces off against the White Walkers on several occasions and loses several of his friends to them. However, it's his younger sister, Arya who actually takes down the Night King.
Many fans are still confused that Arya got to deliver this killer blow when the villain is so linked to Jon. Also, the White Walkers are set up as the main threat for the final season, so having them defeated part-way through is slightly underwhelming.
Cersei Lannister
By the time season 8 comes around, Cersei is responsible for a number of major deaths and has done many despicable things including partaking in one of the most inappropriate romances on TV. Following Daenerys' attack on King's Landing, Cersei and Jaime are left crushed beneath the rubble.
For such a high-profile character, Cersei's death is very low-key. Many fans hoped her death would see her get comeuppance for the terrible things she did, much like her son Joffrey did. Cersei reuniting with her twin and former lover before dying in the rubble feels like an easy way out for the character.
Daenerys Targaryen
While there were signs during the led-up, Daenerys has a surprising arc in the final season. Following a number of defeats, she very quickly descends into an uncontrollable rage and storms King's Landing, killing many innocent people in the process.
In the end, it's up to Jon to kill Daenerys in order to stop her. It's clear that there is still some humanity left in her and she feels hurt by this ultimate betrayal from her lover. Seeing one of the show's most popular characters killing another is devastatingly poetic, and fans are still crushed that things ended in this way for Daenerys.
