Now, Old Valyria on Instagram shares a new batch of AI-generated images, imagining some of the most surprising moments from Game of Thrones but in the anime style of Japanese animation house Studio Ghibli. The moments featured in the art include Joffrey Baratheon's gruesome death, the fight between the Mountain and Oberyn Martell, Jon Snow facing down an army during the Battle of the Bastards, Daenerys Targaryen during the birth of her dragons, Tyrion Lannister observing the devastation at King's Landing, and Daenerys again, seemingly after one of her dragons has been killed. An Animated Spinoff Could Arrive Eventually

So far, Game of Thrones has remained firmly in the world of live-action. The franchise continues to expand with new spinoffs, however. House of the Dragon premiered in 2022, returning for its sophomore outing last year. Now, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is set to premiere later this year, marking another new spinoff. The franchise has experienced great success in the realm of live-action, but there has been talk of an animated take on Game of Thrones eventually making its way to screens.

There was, at one point, as many as four animated Game of Thrones spinoffs in development. One of these spinoffs was under the working title of The Golden Empire. Martin confirmed development on the show back in 2022, revealing later that same year that the four animated shows that were in development was eventually whittled down to only two. A spinoff called The Sea Snake was originally in development as a live-action show, but Martin recently revealed that this project had made the jump to animation for cost reasons.

Animation Is A Great Medium To Bring Westeros To Life

Though the world of Westeros in Game of Thrones is clearly well-suited to live-action, as has been shown with the two series thus far, animation could be a great way to explore more of the fantasy franchise's mythology. With one in-development show having already made the switch from live-action to animation for cost reasons, the medium could be used to show events or settings that would be too expensive to pull off otherwise.

It's unlikely that the main Game of Thrones series will ever be remade in animated form, as the art above depicts, but it could be interesting to see an animated show about the origins of the White Walkers or the building of the Wall, or some other far-flung storylines. No animated Game of Thrones show has made it air so far, but the latest batch of fanart makes a strong case for the franchise eventually making the jump into this medium down the road.
