Fighting, battles, and the warriors who partook in them are significant parts of the show's most popular characters are incredible fighters. In the medievalesque fantasy world of the show, swords are the weapon of choice for the combatants.

While elite swordsmanship is the factor that will decide most one on one sword duels, brute strength comes into play, and there are some intimidatingly strong men and women in the world of Game Of Thrones.

A Collection

There are a lot of fighters in the show, but only a select few display or are known for incredible physical strength and ability, and a lot of who we meet are extremely similar in stature and strength.

Jorah Mormont, Bronn, Daario Naharis, and Jaime Lannister all are pretty similarly built, and not weak by any means, but not insanely strong. There are also those like Meryn Trant, Alliser Thorne, various Dothraki, Jeor Mormont, Ned Stark, and more. Trant and Thorne are bigger, but Bronn and Daario have a ruggedness to them, while Jorah has a Knight's strength, so it is hard to separate a lot of them.

Ser Barristan Selmy

Ser Barristan Selmy died too early

Ser Barristan the Bold could have gotten grouped in with the others, just like there are examples of other individuals breaking out on their own. But Barristan's known resumé as a stunning warrior with evident strength puts him above.

Even in his older age, Barristan was as skilled a fighter as they come, and displayed great power for his age. When younger, Barristan was even more so, serving under King Aerys' Kingsguard as a revered Knight, and exceptional swordsman.

Greatjon & Smalljon Umber

Greatjon Umber and his son Smalljon Umber do not pop up all that much in the series to display their size and strength, but they definitely are physically imposing figures.

The books accentuate their sheer presence far more, like so many characters, but they appear in the series as soldiers, Greatjon for Robb and the Stark's, and his son later for Ramsay, with Smalljon right amid the Battle of the Bastards.

Ser Brienne Of Tarth

Gwendoline Christie as Brienne of Tarth in Game of Thrones

Arguably the Umber's deserve a place above Brienne, but what fans see from Brienne in the show strength-wise while she wields a sword speaks for itself.

Brienne was a brilliant fighter, defeating many great opponents, and proving her worthiness time and time again. Her great stature and strength were always evident, and she got wrongfully teased for it. It did end up working very much in her favor, however.

Ser Arthur Dayne

Ser Arthur Dayne is only present in small amounts in the show, appearing in Bran's dives into the past where he finds out the truth about Jon Snow. However, he is widely known as perhaps the greatest swordsman in Westeros.

He was an elite warrior, but also displayed great strength. He wielded not one, but two swords with absolute ease, good size and stature, and incredible technique, but also with the help of raw power.

Tormund Giantsbane

Prior to the top four or five on this list, it is tough to separate a lot of people, Tormund Giantsbane included, with a lot of people having a case to be higher than the other.

What audiences see from Tormund in the series is fantastic though. He seems to outpower Smalljon Umber in the Battle of the Bastards, tears through the Night's Watch, as well as the Army of the Dead and the other Bolton soldiers. He is quick, powerful, explosive, and strong.

Khal Drogo

Khal Drogo Game of Thrones

Khal Drogo was only in one season of Game Of Thrones, but made a significant impact and was a great character for his time in it. He also immediately stamped himself as one of the most intimidating individuals in the show.

In the books, he seemed to be even bigger, but in the show, he was still an explosive and dynamic fighter with unbelievable power and charisma. His strength shone through every time fans got to see him in combat.

Sandor 'The Hound' Clegane

Sandor (The Hound) Clegane sees a vision in the flames on Game of Thrones

Another character who proved himself as a force to be reckoned with early on in the show was one of its most consistently great characters, and fan-favorite, the Hound.

There was something wild in the blood of the Clegane brothers, with both growing up to become huge men. The Hound was physically dominant yet also elite with a blade, making him one of Westeros' best fighters of his time, as well as one of the scariest.

Robert Baratheon

Robert Baratheon in Game of Thrones

Robert Baratheon's legacy as a deadly fighter is not massively known and understood by those who only watch the show, but since he is very much in the series, and his exploits are talked about a good bit, he earns his place.

Robert brought down terror on his enemies, ittedly usually with a warhammer, not a sword. In his younger days, he may not have been massively tall, but he was well built, heavy, and superbly strong, as well as a real warrior.

Gregor 'The Mountain' Clegane

Of course, there is simply nobody in Game Of Thrones who wields a sword who is as physically terrifying as Sandor's brother Gregor 'the Mountain' Clegane.

What is there to say about him that has not already been said? He crushed a man's skull with his bare hands, that is all one needs to know about the Mountain to realize how unbelievably strong he was.
