Sansa Stark becoming Queen in the North is one of the most satisfying elements of Game of Thrones' ending. Things wrap up pretty neatly, despite the fact that the Great Houses of Westeros are locked in massive political conflicts for much of the series.

Given Sansa's fate, those conflicts should have continued beyond season 8. And if Game of Thrones season 9 were to happen, it could finally fix one glaring issue with her becoming queen. Although this turn of events makes sense for Sansa, narratively, it would have had a domino effect in Westeros. There's no way other leaders would have accepted a new king when the North established independence. Bran would likely have dealt with further challenges and uprisings thanks to his sister's new role.

Dorne & The Iron Islands Shouldn't Have Accepted The North's Independence Without Their Own

Both Had A History Of Rebelling Against The Crown

While Winterfell's allies may have accepted the North's newfound independence, there's no way Dorne and the Iron Islands would have agreed to it without pushing for their own. Both regions have a history of pushing back against the crown, and Yara even seeks independence when allying with Daenerys Targaryen in Game of Thrones season 6. The Iron Islands rebelled numerous times prior to this pact, so Yara's response to the North governing itself doesn't add up. She should be outraged that Sansa becomes an independent leader when she doesn't.

Dorne's pushback is less obvious within the context of Game of Thrones, but during Robert's Rebellion and Game of Thrones, they likely would have wanted to break free from the crown.

Game Of Thrones Season 9 Could Use This As A Story For King Bran

This Is One Obvious Way To Continue The Story

Isaac Hempstead Wright as Bran Stark looking serious in Game of Thrones season 8

Whenever the possibility of Game of Thrones season 9 or a sequel series comes up, one of the biggest questions is what it would be about. The original show wraps up pretty neatly, so there isn't an obvious threat or conflict the remaining characters would need to overcome. However, the North's independence opens the door for further conflicts within Westeros. Although Game of Thrones' series finale doesn't address the Iron Islands' or Dorne's response to this, another season could.

It'd be interesting to see Bran put his Three-Eyed Raven powers to work as king, as he'd be able to learn from the past in a way prior leaders couldn't.

This would also give King Bran the chance to prove himself, revealing how he handles conflicts between the various regions in the Seven Kingdoms. It'd be interesting to see Bran put his Three-Eyed Raven powers to work as king, as he'd be able to learn from the past in a way prior leaders couldn't. If Game of Thrones season 9 ever does happen, this is the perfect way to do it. It would fill in gaps from the original series, and it could give further meaning to its ending.
