In a show famous for its many, many deaths, Grenn's demise on Spotlight's Tom McCarthy - that it was almost completely reshot. The pilot was said to be far too talky and stilted, with even simple story beats like Cersei and Jaime Lannister being siblings not being clear.
Thankfully, a reworked pilot and successful first season led to Game Of Thrones becoming one of the biggest shows in television history. Viewers soon became addicted to its blend of fantastic characters and shock twists, with the show seemingly becoming more popular with each ing season. The series would eventually sur its source material, with season 6 onwards consisting of mostly original storylines. Sadly, fans were mostly left unfulfilled by Games Of Thrones' final season, which despite featuring some impressive battles and great sequences, felt like it raced to the end.
Game Of Thrones also became infamous for its deaths, with heroic main characters often meeting horrible ends. The Red Wedding is undoubtedly one of the series' most shocking sequences, but entire lists could be dedicated to the show's stacked body count. One demise that doesn't get mentioned so much is that of Grenn and his fellow Night's Watch brothers in season 4's "The Watcher's On The Wall."
The whole episode is an epic battle, with the Night's Watch holding off an attack by wildlings at Castle Black. There are a few notable deaths in this Game Of Thrones episode, including Pyp and Jon Snow's love interest Ygritte (Rose Leslie). During the fight, Jon tasks Grenn - who ed the Night's Watch at the same time as him with the two becoming close friends - with holding the Castle's inner gate, no matter what. Grenn and five other charge down the tunnel and must confront the giant Mag Mar Tun Doh Weg.
While the others cower in fear at the rapidly approaching giant, Grenn takes charge and makes them recite the Night's Watch oath. The brothers chant their vows in defiance as the giant race towards the gate, with the scene cutting before viewers see the outcome. Jon and Sam later inspect the tunnel to find Grenn and the others dead, but they managed to take the giant with them too and hold the gate. Grenn and his men's final stand in Game Of Thrones is one of the most rousing moments of the battle and their demise is almost more memorable for what isn't shown, with the fight taking place entirely offscreen.
