Game of Thrones 'Stormborn' Reunion Explained

[Mild SPOILERS ahead for those not caught up on Game of Thrones.]

Last night's big reunion on Game of Thrones second episode 'Stormborn' may have foreshadowed the fate of Ayra Stark (Maisie Williams). During the episode, the young murderess made a pit stop at an inn on the road to King's Landing, where her old friend Hot Pie (Ben Hawkey) happened to be working, perfecting his baking skills. During their conversation, Hot Pie brings up that Jon Snow (Kit Harington) is now the King of the North and uprooted Ramsay Bolton (Iwan Rheon) from Winterfell. Ayra, who at first thinks he's lying, is in shock and quickly decides to head home instead of exacting revenge on Queen Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey).

On the way home, Ayra has another reunion fans have been dying to see since season 1 - Ayra and her former pet direwolf Nymeria - who, if you , had a rock flung at her by the young Stark in order to save her from Cersei's wrath after she bit Joffrey (Jack Gleeson). The reunion didn't go the way fans expect though; the now huge direwolf simply looked into Arya's eyes and walked away with her pack of snarling wolves and Ayra responded with, "That’s not you." It's a bit of a confusing statement, but it's actually a throwback to a line Ayra says in season 1 to her father, "That's not me," when he suggests that one day she will be married to a great lord and live in a castle with children of her own. Clearly, Ayra was right, considering the path she's followed over the past six years.

In a new interview with EW, Maisie Williams and the episode’s writer, Thrones co-executive producer Bryan Cogman, shared their thoughts on the long awaited reunion and how it may foreshadow Arya's fate as the season progresses. Here is what Williams said about the scene:

“Ever since the show got rid of Nymeria, it’s one of the questions I’ve been tweeted the most. It’s even nicer that they don’t live happily ever after. Nymeria has created her own world and created her own pack and isn’t ready to be Arya’s pet. To be someone’s pet would reverse everything she’s learned. So they almost just regard each other and go their separate ways.”

Like Arya herself, Nymeria has found a way to survive in the harsh world of Westeros and can now stand on her own. She doesn't need Arya to watch over her, so she simply leaves her in the woods to return to Winterfell alone, but Nymeria's actions could have a deeper meaning - foreshadowing Arya's fate. Here is what Cogman had to say about the scene:

“So much of this season is swinging back to season 1. Since we last had Arya in the Riverlands she’s had all these crazy adventures. In a television show that’s all about Nymeria the Wolf, she’s had adventures too. She’s gathered this pack of wolves and is now doing the Old Gods’ work herself. Arya and Nymeria do and don’t have the connection they’ve always had. In the end, they’re both lone wolves. They can’t go back to the way things were. And that might be foreshadowing for Arya too.”

His statement, "They can’t go back to the way things were. And that might be foreshadowing for Arya too" should make Arya fans nervous. It could be very well foreshadowing that Arya never makes it home to Winterfell or, if she makes it home, she may realize that it's not home to her anymore causing her to leave and continue being the lone wolf of the Stark family.

And if what Sansa (Sophie Turner) says in the trailers is true,"When the snows fall and the white winds blow, the lone wolf dies but the pack survives," things aren't looking good for Arya - especially if she decides the life of a lone wolf is better than life in a pack.
