Gamora Was Unstoppable With The Black Vortex

gamora as black vortex first appearance

The iteration of Gamora highlighted by Brittany Noel was created by cosmic entity The Black Vortex. The story of Gamora falling under the Black Vortex's influence is a strange one. It first appeared in 2015’s Guardians of the Galaxy & X-Men: Black Vortex Alpha #1 – by Sam Humphries, Ed McGuinness and Kris Anka – where Gamora and X-Men member Beast stumbled across the dark mirror known as Black Vortex. The black mirror showed Gamora her possible future as a cosmic being, endowed with powers that could change the galaxy. Gamora and Beast submitted to the Black Vortex’s power, transforming into ultimate cosmic beings and spreading their influence across the galaxy.

Gamora’s Time With The Black Vortex Was Too Brief

Gamora’s newfound abilities as a cosmic goddess let her imagination run wild. She recruits the mutant Angel, alongside Beast, with the three of them sharing their cosmic abilities. The trio work together to share their power with a small and primitive planet, until Ronan and his Acc Corps intercepted their plans and stole the Black Vortex. While Beast and Angel couldn’t maintain their forms, Gamora retained the Black Vortex power, keeping her new look, and her abilities, for a good while. Empowered with flight, super speed, and invulnerability, Gamora temporarily left the Guardians to pursue Thanos and seek her ultimate vengeance.

Gamora would lose her Black Vortex abilities after a few months of searching for Thanos, but her time with the cosmic powers was very impressive. The Black Vortex’s cosmic forms are usually on a time limit; Gamora is one of the rare few whose time with the Black Vortex lasted more than a month. Gamora’s training, combined with her enhancements over the years, factored into her ability to wield the Black Vortex power. Brittany Noel's excellent cosplay from San Diego Comic-Con 2023 is an impressive tribute to Gamora’s strongest form, a reminder that the Deadliest Woman in the Galaxy is stronger than people realize.
