A new trailer was unveiled for indie game The Gecko Gods during the online Wholesome Direct presentation. The new game from developer Louis Waloschek asks players to explore ruins on a mysterious island and solve puzzles in their tiny lizard form.
The Wholesome Direct was a stream broadcast over E3 weekend that showcased 75 indie games. While many big studio showcases during E3 weekend focus on high stakes games full of action, death and mayhem, the Wholesome Direct was largely full of bright, chill, cheerful games that looked far more relaxing than many of the AAA titles that will dominate news coverage throughout E3. Players looking to snap photos of cute creatures, design houses, and operate inns would do well to go check out the trailers unveiled during the stream and during the Guerrilla Collective showcases as well.
In like the sword-wielding fox in Tunic, but a regular old gecko, albeit clearly one with higher than average intelligence. As seen in the trailer, players will use natural gecko abilities to solve puzzles. This includes scaling walls to reach switches in the ceiling, biting onto chains to swing across gaps, and doing some light platforming. Combining these lizard abilities will allow players to do things like revealing objects they can use their lizard body to push onto a switch, which will unlock doors and allow them to progress deeper into the tunnel. To stop players from simply using the walls to navigate around obstacles, there will likely be surfaces the gecko can't traverse.
What The Gecko Gods Story is About
The trailer for The Gecko Gods was light on story details, though it appears from the trailer that the ancient civilization either worshiped or feared some kind of gecko creature. There are pictographs on one of the walls the gecko climbs on that show a lizard creature interacting with humans, but whether it is attacking or gifting the humans a resource (as gods are wont to do) remains to be seen. There was no combat or enemies to be seen in the trailer, which indicates this game will be an exclusively puzzle based adventure.
The Gecko Gods looks to be a gorgeous puzzler that will have gamers scrambling around a tropical island to unlock its secrets and uncover the legends of a lost people. It is only one of many delightful surprising indie games unveiled during E3 week, proving there are plenty of games out there for those looking to get away from the AAA gaming space.
