Although Young Sheldon’s ending left the couple seeming relatively stable and happy, The Big Bang Theory already confirmed that Montana Jordan’s Georgie and Emily Osment’s Mandy eventually broke up.

Young Sheldon’s Only Thanksgiving Episode Created A Weird ‘80s Pop Culture Paradox

Like many earlier sitcoms, The Big Bang Theory's prequel Young Sheldon created a weird unintentional paradox during the show's Thanksgiving episode.

In The Big Bang Theory season 11, episode 23, “The Sibling Realignment,” Georgie mentioned an “Ex-wife.” This proves that he and Mandy don’t stay together, meaning Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage will eventually need to explain the couple’s separation. This seems like a tricky task as Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage season 1 has mostly proven that they are a surprisingly solid couple with a bright future and a lot of potential. Season 1, episode 6, “A Regular Samaritan,” doubled down on this when Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage introduced Georgie’s new friend Valerie and, in the process, shut down one possible explanation.

First Marriage Episode 6 Makes It Unlikely That Georgie Will Cheat On Mandy

Georgie Seemed Shocked When His New Friend Tried To Kiss Him

At the end of “A Regular Samaritan,” Georgie realized that his new friend Valerie had more than the lord on her mind when she kissed him after a Bible study session. Georgie was surprised by this and didn’t reciprocate her advances, pulling away before Mandy revealed that she had seen the exchange. Mandy punched Valerie as the episode ended, but Georgie turning down Valerie’s advances proves he is unlikely to cheat on Mandy. This means that another potential explanation for their breakup can be ruled out, although it is possible that Mandy might cheat on Georgie in the future.

Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage almost brought back a tragic Young Sheldon twist, as Mandy witnessing the kiss between Valeria and Georgie was reminiscent of Sheldon mistakenly believing that his father George Sr. cheated on his mother Mary. The same fate could easily have befallen Georgie, but Mandy fortunately saw the context of the kiss and knew he was blameless. Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage avoiding Christmas means the show can improve its chances of emerging from Young Sheldon’s shadow, and ensuring that Georgie did not suffer the same fate as George Sr furthered this goal.

What Could Be The Reason For Georgie & Mandy's Divorce In First Marriage

Georgie & Mandy’s Divorce Will Need A Thorough Justification

Since Georgie clearly isn’t interested in cheating on Mandy, it is tough to work out what caused Georgie and Mandy’s divorce at this point in Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage season 1. The flaws in their relationship might become more obvious in coming episodes, but currently, the most likely prospect seems to be Georgie becoming a business rival to Mandy’s father, Jim. George has a keen business sense despite his dimwitted exterior and constantly comes up with new income streams for Jim’s tire store. Meanwhile, Georgie's older self owns a chain of tire stores in The Big Bang Theory.

While Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage’s off-screen tragedies prove that the show isn’t too heavily invested in paying off all of Young Sheldon’s setups, the spinoff can’t simply ignore Georgie and Mandy’s breakup. As the title implies, this event is the entire reason for the show’s existence. Even if the duo later remarry, Georgie and Mandy’s breakup must be explained and Georgie’s sharp business sense leading him to set up a rival tire store currently seems like the most obvious cause. Any other obvious reasons have largely been ruled out throughout season 1.

First Marriage Sets Up Georgie & Mandy's Split To Be More Heartbreaking

The Sitcom Spinoff Addressed Numerous Potential Causes Already

Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage keeps making Georgie and Mandy’s breakup more tragic by proving that it wasn’t caused by irreconcilable differences. Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage’s unusual age gap could have been blamed for their decision to call it quits, but episode 4, “Todd’s Mom,” already saw the couple directly address this issue. Living with Mandy’s credit card debt could have exacerbated their struggles, but episode 3, “Secrets, Lies and a Chunk of Change” saw George not only accept this issue, but promise to help Mandy overcome it.

It has become almost impossible to work out just what went wrong for Young Sheldon’s central couple.

With each new episode of Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage, another obvious cause for the pair’s breakup becomes irrelevant. Episode 2, “Some New York Nonsense,” even saw an open-minded Mandy encourage Georgie to address his anxiety. Now, “A Regular Samaritan” has proven that infidelity also wasn’t the problem, at least from Georgie’s end. As such, it has become almost impossible to work out just what went wrong for Young Sheldon’s central couple, something Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage must solve in future episodes.

New episodes of Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage air on CBS Thursdays at 8pm.
