Ghost of Tsushima’s plot is based on the real-life story of the Mongol invasion of Tsushima in 1274, which means the sequel could focus on the second attack in 1281. The second invasion could be much bigger since the war includes soldiers from Korea and Southern China, which the Mongols have conquered. On the other hand, the Japanese have not been idle and have prepared larger samurai forces to defend themselves from the invaders. The sequel could even revisit Iki island from Ghost Of Tsushima's expansion, since the second invasion begins with an attack on the area before advancing to mainland Japan.

Despite Jin’s best efforts to fight against the Mongols, the Shogun regards him as a traitor due to the protagonist’s dishonorable actions. Jin is now a ronin, and the Shogun’s men will likely hunt him since Shimura fails to kill the protagonist. With Jin essentially exiled, Ghost of Tsushima 2 could focus on his inner struggle, where the protagonist has to decide if he still wishes to risk his life to protect the people who reject him.

Another event that could occur is Jin traveling to mainland Japan in an attempt to fight the invading forces. Besides allowing players to see more of feudal Japan in Ghost of Tsushima 2, the inclusion of the mainland area could also introduce the Shogun as a major character who could become Jin's adversary. The Shogun has made his stance clear in Ghost of Tsushima, and he could likely become an enemy from within that Jin has to confront while he deals with the Mongols. Despite the limited information about Ghost of Tsushima's sequel, the game could likely focus on the second Mongol invasion of Japan and Jin's struggle as a rogue samurai.
