Sucker Punch Productions unexpectedly unannounced a multiplayer addition to its popular samurai adventure, Ghost of Tsushima: Legends, back in August and left many fans feeling a little, well, sucker punched. Though fans of the game had expected some kind of post-game content from the studio, many believed it would come in the form of single-player DLC. However, the seemingly out-of-the-blue multiplayer mode which released today appears to have been a part of the game’s plan ever since its early development.
Ghost of Tsushima is an action-adventure game which takes inspiration from a real never intended to be a faithful recreation of history, they did make the conscious decision to ground the single-player experience in reality. The same does not seem to hold true for Ghost of Tsushima’s multiplayer mode, which has embraced a little more of the supernatural.
In an IGN interview with senior game designer Darren Bridges, the developer recounted how Ghost of Tsushima: Legends was conceived almost from the start of the game’s development. The multiplayer mode, Bridges says, was being developed alongside the main story and what would eventually be called Legends was always meant to be a key part of the game. Legends seemingly went through several months of ideation before emerging in the form that launched today. The team decided to explore a more supernatural realm in its multiplayer in contrast to the single-player content because, among other things, it afforded players the opportunity to take on more varied abilities. The mythological angle also allowed the developers to sensibly connect Jin’s grounded reality to a fun multiplayer experience.
Today’s free Ghost of Tsushima: Legends DLC launch coincides with several other updates for the game. As well as being able to jump into multiplayer, Ghost of Tsushima owners pet and recruit dogs found on the island.
Ghost of Tsushima: Legends is a free update for any player who already owns the game and promises to bring a ton of new content. With the launch of the PlayStation 5 so close, this update gives current fans a reason to revisit the game and is a tempting offer for players who are looking to relive one of the best games of this year on the next-gen console.
