The Jay could finally see the ghosts – temporarily, at least.

In a wacky accident, Sam and Jay accidentally electrocute themselves in the Ghosts season 4 episode while trying to fix some wiring in the inn, and when they do, Nancy and Pete temporarily move in and take possession of their bodies. Sam is able to expel Nancy, but when she tries to exorcise Pete from Jay's body, it turns out that Pete's soul is so pure that it's Jay's soul that gets kicked out of his own body. As a result, Jay enters the spirit realm and can see the ghosts of Woodstone mansion B&B for the first time.

Ghosts Season 4's Jay Twist Includes An iZombie Reference

It Was A Cheeky & Clever Line

Jay talking to Mark in Ghosts season 4, episode 5

Pete's possession of Jay's body is relatively brief, but it sets up a great reference to McIver's previous show, CW's iZombie, and also nicely allows her to dip into a skill she used in that series. Eventually, Pete vacates his temporary host after using Jay's body to see and hug his daughter for the first time in over 40 years. For a brief moment, however, Jay's body is left without a spirit or soul, leaving him a zombie, which is when the cheeky reference to iZombie happens. As she looks at her temporarily zombified husband, Sam deadpans, "I hate zombies" – which is exactly what her iZombie character, Olivia "Liv" Moore, was: a zombie.

Ghosts Continues Rose McIver's Supernatural Network TV Streak

She Has A Very Unique Beginning Of A Career Pattern

With two shows in a row now, one a cult favorite and the other a legit hit, Rose McIver has carved out something of a fun niche for herself with network supernatural comedies. In both CW's iZombie and now CBS' Ghosts, McIver's characters had some sort of supernatural element to them. Not only was Liv a zombie who worked as a medical examiner, but when she ate the brains of deceased victims in iZombie, Liv temporarily absorbed their personalities and memories, enabling her to solve their murders. In Ghosts, of course, Sam is still human but can see the spirit world.

An Underrated Zombie Show From 9 Years Ago Did What A Lot Of Zombie Movies Failed To

There are plenty of zombie movies and TV shows to enjoy, but not all of them manage to do what this underrated series from 2015 does best.

Two shows isn't exactly enough for a pattern, but still, it's not a surprise that McIver was cast in Ghosts after her turn in iZombie; her comedic timing and talent were really flexed in the CW zombie dramedy. Her ability to portray so many different characters when she absorbed dead people's personalities was a key aspect of the show, and it was fun seeing her return to that in the Ghosts season 4 Christmas special when she temporarily had to act like Sodaro's Nancy. Hopefully, McIver will get another chance to step into the role of another character on the show in future episodes.
