Warning: This article contains SPOILERS for Ghosts season 4, episode 19, “Pinkus Returns”

Although The ghosts of CBS’s Ghosts are the true stars of the sitcom, and their unique paranormal powers are part of what makes them so memorable. Whether it is Thor manipulating electricity or Hetty temporarily becoming visible to humans once a year, the ghost powers are a big part of what keeps the sitcom’s formula feeling fresh.

As Alberta’s seemingly unhelpful ghost power proves, these abilities are sometimes less important than the way that the characters wield them. Compared to Pete’s power to travel all over the world and Sass's ability to enter the dreams of others, Isaac’s power of making a bad smell and Alberta’s audible whistling seem pretty subpar. However, in season 4, episode 15, “The Bachelorette Party,” Alberta used this very ability to save her descendant’s engagement.

The Ghost’s Ability To Type Has Been More Of A Burden

Trevor’s Meddling Caused A Lot of Problems Earlier In Season 4

Similarly, seemingly great ghost powers can become surprisingly burdensome when wielded the wrong way. For example, Trevor has the ability to move small objects, which might not have meant much to ghosts in an earlier era. However, since this allows him to type on phone screens and computers, it means Trevor can live a surprisingly full life as a ghost complete with a full-time job. Unfortunately, as Flower’s Ghosts season 4 episode 18 subplot proved, Trevor rarely makes the most of his gifts.

In that outing, Trevor opted to spend the money he earned in his job bidding on movie memorabilia on eBay instead of contributing to a good cause. Similarly, in season 4, episode 11, “Thorapy 2: Abandonment Issues,” Trevor intervened when he thought that Jay’s sister Bela had accidentally ordered only a single pound of shrimp for his restaurant. Trevor changed the order into 100 pounds, but this proved a mistake when it turned out that Bela had intentionally only ordered a single pound to test Jay’s palate.

Trevor’s ghost power has historically been as much of a burden as it is a blessing, not because of the ability itself, but rather how he keeps misusing it in the same way.

In much the same way, Trevor meddled in “The Bachelorette Party” when he messaged a critic reviewing Jay’s restaurant and bribed him for a better review. While Jay’s Ghosts season 4 plots have been repetitive, Trevor’s consistent misuse of his power has been even more frustrating. Trevor’s ghost power has historically been as much of a burden as it is a blessing. However, this is not because of the ability itself, but rather it is due to how he keeps misusing it in the same way. This made episode 19, “Pinkus Returns,” a welcome change.

Trevor’s Meddling Finally Gets Used For The Greater Good In Ghosts Season 4, Episode 19

Trevor’s Meddling Finally Paid Off In Ghosts Season 4 Episode 19

At first glance, it would appear that Trevor needs to stop using his ability to text to meddle in the affairs of the living. However, “Pinkus Returns” proves that the reality of his situation is more complicated than that. Trevor meddled for all the right reasons in “Pinkus Returns,” forcing his former colleague to tell to his daughter that Trevor was her biological father. Trevor’s daughter Abby was initially hurt and shocked by this surprise, but she soon reconciled with Pinkus thanks to Trevor.

Ghosts Season 4, Episode 17 Highlights An Unexplored Storyline For Thor

Ghosts season 4 episode 17's Thor subplot brings back a familiar theme from many of the character's storylines, and a hidden pattern starts to emerge.

When Sam proved unwilling to tell Abby that Trevor was her real father, Trevor took things into his own ghostly hands and sent Pinkus a text from Sam’s phone. However, he accidentally sent the text to Abby, who soon discerned that Trevor was her father. While Ghosts season 4’s Nigel replacement Joan dominated the action in the show's last few outings, Trevor took center stage in this poignant plot. Realizing he had messed up, Trevor made Abby a slideshow of her favorite moments with her father.

Thanks to Trevor’s meddling, Abby reconciled with Pinkus but still got to learn about her late biological father Trevor from Sam. Compared to his earlier stories, when he was meddling with Bela's order and Jay's review, Trevor’s texts were thoroughly justified in “Pinkus Returns.” Not only did the ghost not cause another unnecessary catastrophe with his powers, but Trevor’s ability instead resulted in his most moving story yet.

The arrival of Trevor’s daughter was one of the sitcom’s most poignant moments, as the young stockbroker desperately wanted to reach Abby but had to accept that his with her would be limited. Even compared to Sass’s tragic Ghosts season 4 love life, this was one of the show’s saddest reminders of the limitations the spirits face in their existence between life and the afterlife. Luckily, Sam acted as an intermediary between them, meaning Abby did get to know her father in Ghosts season 4, episode 19.
