Cobra Commander may currently be on the hunt for Energon in his own series, but another G.I. Joe villain is waiting in the wings. Skybound Entertainment just revealed that Destro will be headlining his own miniseries this summer, adding to the Energon Universe shared continuity of Transformers and G.I. Joe as the line continues to grow.
Announced via the newly announced Scarlett series.
While Destro has already appeared in the pages of Duke, his self-titled series looks to delves further into the famed villain’s role in the new continuity:
“James McCullen Destro XXIV is the man behind M.A.R.S. Industries, the undisputed leader in providing high-tech weapons to world powers…for the right price. But the emergence of Energon has changed everything. As Destro’s ambitions grow, the “Crimson Twins” Tomax and Xamot Paoli emerge to destroy their competition, and Cobra Commander realizes his current ally could be his future greatest enemy.”
Destro Will Pick Up Where Cobra Commander Leaves Off
It’s easy to imagine that the first issue of Destro will see the Cobra organization having officially formed in the Energon Universe.
Destro has already been revealed to be using Energon to create classic Cobra weapons and vehicles through M.A.R.S. Industries. Now it sounds like his new series will be picking up where Cobra Commander leaves off when that series concludes in May. With the solicits promising an uneasy alliance between Destro and Cobra Commander, it’s easy to imagine that the first issue of Destro will see the Cobra organization having officially formed in the Energon Universe. The appearance of the twins Tomax and Xamot, the corporate face of Cobra who also lead the elite Crimson Guard, provides further evidence for this theory.
The team for the Destro miniseries is pretty exciting, and sounds like the perfect choice to handle a story of political intrigue and the dark side of the military industrial complex. ”I’m incredibly excited to bring Destro to life with Andrei,” says writer Dan Watters, who will also be writing Skybound’s new Creature of the Black Lagoon series. “This is going to be a visceral, explosive thriller in which he [Destro] isn’t very nice to anyone at all — everything you’d want from your favorite amoral arms trafficker.”
Artist Andrei Bresson shares his excitement:
“I’m pretty excited because everything going on with the Energon Universe so far has been bonkers and Destro…he is just an absolute bad***, ready to kill and destroy.”
Destro Will Introduce Classic G.I. Joe Villains Tomax & Xamot
The preview for Destro #1 also prominently features the B.A.T.s, traditionally the android troopers of Cobra who first appeared in G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero #44. Their appearance in a foreign uprising suggests the kind of power and influence that Destro wields in the Energon Universe, and also how the presence of the Transformers’ power source is changing the global landscape. These power plays between Cobra Commander and Destro were always fun to read in the old Marvel series, and seeing the two form an uneasy alliance and subsequently try to stab each other in the back in G.I. Joe’s new Energon Universe continuity should be a treat for fans both new and old.
Destro #1 will be available June 19 from Skybound Entertainment.
