WARNING! Potential spoilers ahead for Scarlett #3G.I. Joe's Scarlett is deep undercover in the Energon Universe, with the first two issues of her new series chronicling her mission to infiltrate the Arashikage ninja clan to acquire a dangerous weapon. The third issue looks to further complicate her mission, as Scarlett isn’t sure whether or not she can trust her old friend Jinx.

Released via Skybound, the preview for Scarlett #3 comes from the creative team of Kelly Thompson, Marco Ferrari, Lee Loughridge and Rus Wooton. The story picks up right where the previous issue left off, as the Arashikage have tasked Scarlett with infiltrating a building and retrieving their super-weapon from a rival organization.

It looks like more espionage action in the giant summer blockbuster tradition. Scarlett even has a close call with a shark as she swims through the water tanks of the Sato II building, although she sadly doesn’t get a chance to mix things up with the apex predator.

Can Scarlett Trust Her Old Friend Jinx?

While sneaking her way into the enemy building, Scarlett reflects on her current circumstances, reminding herself why she took on the mission in the first place. While Stalker of G.I. Joe wants her to retrieve whatever weapon the Arashikage haVE in their possession, Scarlett’s true motive for going undercover with the clan is to bring her friend Jinx back. Jinx was previously assigned to go undercover with the Arashikge, but Stalker is worried that she’s switched sides after losing with her. Scarlett’s mission is deeply personal in that regard, as all she wants is to learn whether or not her friend has betrayed them all.

In previous G.I. Joe continuities, Jinx was revealed to be Kimi 'Kim' Arashikage, a cousin of Thomas Arashikage, AKA 'Storm Shadow'

Scarlett learning that the Arashikage have actually lost their weapon to a rival organization complicates things even further, as now Scarlett has to steal the weapon for the organization she was assigned to retrieve it from in the first place. It should add suitable conflict for the series as it reaches its halfway point, as Scarlett finds herself drawn deeper and deeper into the web of intrigue and deception. It will be very interesting to see how it all shakes out when the Scarlett series draws to a close, as it will be immediately followed by the launch of an all-new G.I. Joe #1 in November.

Scarlett Brings the Ninjas of G.I. Joe into the Energon Universe

Jinx and Storm Shadow have already debuted in the pages of Scarlett, but there is one question on the minds of every G.I. Joe fan out there: where is Snake Eyes? The franchise’s most popular character has been persona non grata in the Energon Universe thus far. Given that Jinx and Storm Shadow’s alliances in the new continuity are currently in flux, it will be most interesting to see how Snake Eyes will be handled when he makes his debut. Whatever happens next in Scarlett, fans can expect the same level of quality seen in all Energon Universe G.I. Joe titles so far.
