A live-action Hasbro’s realistic action figures saw their first iteration on the screen with an animated series in the 1980s, which led to a sequence of animated movies over the following years.
Lady Jaye was introduced in a 1984 cartoon series before appearing in comics and receiving her own line of action figures. More recently, the G.I. Joe franchise was revived in 2009 with the live-action film G.I. Joe: G.I. Joe spin-off centered around Snake Eyes is currently in the works and set to hit theaters in October, starring Crazy Rich Asians breakout star Henry Golding as the film’s hero.
Now, the G.I. Joe franchise is getting another revival, this time as a live-action series at Amazon, according to Variety. The series will act as a standalone story revolving around the G.I. Joe undercover operative known as Lady Jaye, but it will still relate to the larger G.I. Joe universe.
The Lady Jaye series is created by Erik Oleson (Daredevil) who will act as showrunner. The Rise of Cobra and Retaliation producer Lorenzo DiBonaventura will act as an executive producer for the show. However, there is no news on who will play Lady Jaye or whether or not Palicki will reprise the role.
In most cases, a show is only as good as its showrunner. Since Amazon's Lady Jaye series has secured Oleson as its showrunner, who has had previous success as a writer on Amazon’s Man in the High Castle and showrunner for the third season of Netflix’s Daredevil, it seems to be off to a good start. Considering the two previous G.I. Joe movies were considered clunkers, the series has a lot to make up for as it looks to correct course for the larger G.I. Joe franchise.
