Although Gilmore Girls had 40-minute episodes, what fans find remarkable is that the scripts often ranged from 60 to 80 pages long due to the fast-paced dialogue and quippy remarks from the leading ladies (via Vox). While other shows of the same length didn't have quite as lengthy scripts, Gilmore Girls stood out from the crowd for imploring a West Wing-level walking and talking drama series.
With all the talking that occurred on the show, there were many quotes that stuck out to viewers. For those that use Ranker, it appears that the most memorable and profound quotes from Gilmore Girls include a lot Lorelai Gilmore remarks, an emotional speech from Rory, and a heavily relatable complaint about people from Michel.
Lorelai's Fact Of Life
"You Have To Sleep, It Keeps You Pretty."
Lorelai Gilmore was one of television's best moms for a reason: she gave really solid advice. One of her best pieces to Rory was that she needed to take a break from studying to sleep, because sleep was what was going to give her that youthful glow.
Rory wasn't impressed with her mother's words, and had a phenomenal retort in, "Who cares if I'm pretty if I fail my finals?". Even if she didn't always take her mother's advice, some scientists have actually proposed this theory (via The New York Post). While there is no way in knowing if it is actually true, it does highlight a bit of Lorelai's intelligence.
Rory's Confession
"I Don't Know If She Ever Realized That The Person I Most Wanted To Be Was Her."
Rory and Lorelai's mother-daughter bond was something special, and there aren't many other great examples of that kind of love on television.
When Rory gave her valedictorian address as she graduated from Chilton, she thanked her mother for everything she had done for her. From raising her in an inn to making sure she had every opportunity imaginable, Rory had a lot to be thankful for, and she chose the perfect (emotional) moment to shout out to her one-of-a-kind mom.
Lorelai's Musical Moment
"Did You Ever Know That You're My Hero?"
Lorelai was known for her comedy chops, and one of her standout moments was when she attempted to cheer up Rory after discovering that two boys were fighting over her.
After Jess and Dean ruined a party with a full-out brawl, Lorelai sang some Bette Midler to try and bring a smile to her daughter's face. She cracked jokes despite the serious situation, which was exactly what Rory needed at that moment, even if she didn't realize it then and there.
One Of Lorelai's Many Pleas For Coffee
"Coffee Please, And A Shot Of Cynicism."
If there was one cardinal truth of Lorelai Gilmore, it was that she needed to have a coffee cup in her hand at all times. Part of the reason her relationship with Luke Danes thrived (or even started) was because she visited his diner for coffee daily.
Lorelai was never one for traditional requests, which is why her asking for a shot of cynicism was completely in character. The best part of her banter with Luke was that he gave it right back to her, and let her tell him all of her drama.
The Wise Words Of Lorelai Gilmore
"Life's Short. Talk Fast."
One of the hallmarks of Gilmore Girls was the fast-paced walking and talking that occurred on screen. Lorelai Gilmore herself lived by the motto, "Life's short. Talk fast."
Lorelai and Rory were always talking a mile a minute and dishing out pop culture references left and right, not even checking to see if anyone heard or understood them. It was part of their charming personalities that made them stand out from others.
Lorelai's Flexibility
"As Long As Everything Is Exactly The Way I Want It, I Can Totally Be Flexible."
Lorelai was a woman who was well-aware of her faults and flaws, but that didn't always mean she was willing to change or compromise them.
She was honest with herself (and others) about how she needed to be in control of the things going on her life, which was part of the reason she took Rory and ran at just 16 years old. This Lorelai quote perfectly summed up her character, someone who had a lot she wanted to get done but only on her .
A Strange New Exclamation
"Oy With The Poodles Already!"
Desperately in need for a new catchphrase, Lorelai suggested to her daughter that they start saying "Oy with the poodles already!" It hardly caught on in the Gilmore Girls universe, but fans loved it and adopted it as their own saying.
Lorelai explained that the phrase was to be used in a similar connotation to "Good grief!". However, not everything that came out Lorelai's mouth always made sense, and this was one of the things that was a bit far-fetched.
Lorelai's Rules For Boys
"If You're Gonna Throw Your Life Away, He Better Have A Motorcycle!"
It was pretty clear from the pilot episode of Gilmore Girls that Rory was the opposite of her mother as a teenager. She was bookish and kept to herself, whilst her mother had a baby when she was her age.
So when Rory decided on a whim that she didn't want to go to Chilton, Lorelai knew that a boy had to be involved, and explained to her daughter that if she was willing to throw her future away for someone she just met, he better at least ride a motorcycle. This, of course, came back later when Rory's father Chris showed up in Stars Hollow on a motorcycle.
A Sad Truth
"Lorelai Gilmore, Disappointing Mothers Since 1968."
Lorelai's self-awareness made her relatable and hilarious, and though she was part of the problem in her relationship with her own mother, she was also able to poke fun at herself for how she never quite lived up to her mother's expectations.
After letting down not only Emily Gilmore but also Lane's mother, Mrs. Kim, Lorelai said to herself that she was a mother's disappointment since 1968. She was only partially joking, as she was not always a mother's dream.
Michel's Bad Day
"People Are Particularly Stupid Today. I Can't Talk To Any More Of Them."
Michel was Lorelai's brutally honest friend and co-worker, who had absolutely no poker face. He said exactly what was on his mind at all times, which sometimes was great and sometimes a little bit mean.
When Michel was having a hard day, he let it be known to others, and said exactly what everyone else was thinking. He couldn't always handle the high-energy Gilmore ladies, but that was part of what made him so funny: he had no patience for them or the other characters in Stars Hollow. When he said he needed a break from people; he meant it.
