Although Lorelai and Christopher’s ill-fated marriage is a major mistake, the subplot did provide viewers with one all-time great The cast of Gilmore Girls were constantly breaking up and making up. Even now, over a decade and a half after the show’s original run ended, nothing starts a war between fans quicker than saying that Rory belonged with Jess, not Logan, or vice versa. However, while Rory’s trio of infamously messy relationships remain contentious, the heroine inherited her romantic indecision from her mother. By 2016’s revival Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, Lorelai had finally settled down with the love of her life, Luke. However, this romance was hard-won. Lorelei dated Max Medina in season 1, almost marrying him before calling off their engagement. She had various boyfriends and love interests of varying degrees of seriousness in the seasons that followed, including Jason “Digger” Stiles and Alex Lesman. In Gilmore Girls season 6, Lorelai reunited with Rory’s father, Christopher, and began one of the most hated subplots in the show’s history. Shortly after breaking off her engagement to Luke, Lorelai married Christopher.

Luke & Christopher's Christmas Fight Is A Brilliant Gilmore Girls Scene

Gilmore Girls Nailed This Absurd And Unexpectedly Funny Dust-Up

Lorelai and Christopher’s marriage is one of the worst Gilmore Girls plot lines for numerous reasons, among them the fact that the twist arrived so soon after Luke and Lorelai’s breakup. There was also frustration over that breakup itself and the handling of Luke’s newly discovered daughter April, but what ensured that the plot really never worked was Lorelai and Christopher’s lack of chemistry. Christopher was still as immature as ever and Lorelai seemed too smart to fall for him again, so the plot felt forced and unlikely. However, like Mitchum’s lecture to Rory, it set up a great moment.

In season 7, episode 10, “Merry Fisticuffs,” Christopher finally realizes Lorelei has feelings for Luke. This leads to a confrontation between the two in the middle of the town’s elaborate Christmas decorations, with Christopher getting punched by Luke and the pair embarking on one of the show’s funniest comedic set-pieces ever. The satisfaction of seeing the eternally smug Christopher get thumped is one thing, but the two men simultaneously realizing they are too old and out of shape to fight physically is the scene’s best punchline. Add in the discordant holiday decor and viewers are left with a classic scene.

Why Lorelai & Christopher's Marriage In Gilmore Girls Doesn't Work

Christopher & Lorelei’s Reunion Arrived Too Late And Derailed Luke’s Story

Although this scene is superb, it is a standalone moment in an otherwise humdrum plot. Like Rory’s A Year in the Life story, Christopher and Lorelai’s marriage doesn’t work. The pair might have successfully reunited earlier in the series, when viewers weren’t as invested in her romance with Luke and Lorelai hadn’t grown and matured so much. However, by the time the marriage happened, the series was almost over and viewers were understandably annoyed to see two seasons' worth of progress between Luke and Lorelai wasted. As such, Gilmore Girls season 7 needed to break up Lorelai and Christopher.
