Girls Trip 2 Script Update Shared By Regina Hall

Tracy Oliver, co-writer of Girls Trip, confirms Girls Trip 2 is on the way with a change of scenery. Girls Trip was a smash hit comedy released in 2017 that was produced on a $19 million budget before earning $140 million worldwide. The film follows four lifelong friends, played by Regina Hall, Queen Latifah, Tiffany Haddish, and Jada Pinkett Smith, who take a vacation to New Orleans to attend the Essence Festival, where they embrace the fun and rekindle relationships.

While speaking with upset producer Will Packer, revealing, "we're looking to set it in Ghana." And while Oliver didn't offer up production information, fans of the first Girls Trip can rest easy knowing a sequel is on the way.

What Girls Trip 2's New Location Could Mean For The Story

Girls Trip saw four friends reuniting for a vacation after not seeing each other for years. During their trip, they each deal with personal struggles, like infidelity and finances, that are helped through their renewed sisterhood. And with the sequel on the way, it offers new opportunities for each woman to be tackling new problems, especially given that a few years have elapsed since the first film.

With Girls Trip seeing the characters in New Orleans for the Essence Festival, the fact that the sequel is set in Ghana offers some insight. After Oliver revealed the setting at Sundance, Harlem actor Shoniqua Shandai shouted, "Afrochella!" The Afrochella Festival is an event that celebrates African music and culture. So with Girls Trip 2 headed to Ghana, it looks to set up another festival for the protagonists to attend.

Further plot details are currently unknown, but with a similar conceit as the first film, Girls Trip 2 could be looking to copy the formula for success, putting the characters through humorous situations while in a unique festival location. However, the film could also be attempting to subvert expectations by bringing in the audience that loved the first film and then offering them a unique spin they weren't quite anticipating, like what 22 Jump Street embraced. Given that Girls Trip 2 is still in the scripting stage, it will likely be a while before it hits screens, but details will be forthcoming as the movie develops.
