When Glee first premiered in 2009, the Glee Club had only just been revived and many of the main characters barely knew one another, if they even knew each other at all. Each character was figuring out who he or she was and everyone had their own unique goals they wanted to accomplish in their time at McKinley.
For many of the characters, they had big dreams of making it in the entertainment industry. Other characters were simply looking for love and acceptance. However, a few of McKinley High had hopes of killing other people’s hopes and dreams. Ultimately, by the series finale, each of the main characters was able to achieve at least one of the things they hoped for in season.
Mr. Shue: To Win The Glee National Championship
If it weren’t for Mr. Shue the Glee Club would have never survived at McKinley and many of the New Directioners would have never achieved their dreams. For Mr. Shue, the Glee Club is very important because when he attended McKinley in his youth, he was a part of the club back when it was cool.
All Mr. Shue. wanted was for the New Directions to take home a Nationals trophy, and while it took lots of work and a few failures he ultimately was able to cinch the nationals trophy in New York City in season 3.
Mercedes: To Become A Professional Singer
Mercedes was always one of the most talented vocalists of the Glee Club. She had a deep ion for singing and a desire to make a living as a recording artist. Throughout her time in the New Directions, she performed many solos and was able to improve her abilities through performing with the club.
In season 4, Mercedes begins working as a back-up vocalist with a real recording company and is on track to make a name for herself as a singer. In Season 5, Mercedes reveals that she signed a record deal with Sony Music Entertainment and by the finale, she is a very successful singer who opened for Beyonce’s world tour.
Quinn: To Be The Most Popular Girl At School
When Quinn first s the New Directions as a part of Coach Sue’s ploy to take them down, all she cared about was being the most popular and feared girl at school. Quinn was the captain of the cheerleading team, the president of the celibacy club, and dated the coolest boy in school. Unfortunately, she lost all of this in the first season after she became pregnant.
Luckily for Quinn, she was able to reclaim her throne as the coolest and most popular girl in school by the end of the third season. As well as, formed real connections with her fellow glee club , became a more kind-hearted person, and even got into Yale University.
Sue: To Destroy The Glee Club
From the moment the New Directioners meet Coach Sue, it becomes clear that she hates the arts and thinks they are a waste of time and money. She makes it her mission to take down the Glee Club and even gets the school principal to agree to give the Glee Club’s funding to her if they don’t make it to nationals.
Throughout the many seasons of Glee, Sue constantly tries different tactics to sabotage the club. Though by the beginning of season 6, she takes over McKinley High and finally disbands the Glee Club.
Finn: To Find His Purpose
For Finn, ing the New Directions was not his choice. He never had big broadway dreams or a longing for outside validation. All Finn wanted was to find his place in the world and to figure out his purpose.
While he was always torn between his loyalty to the football team and his friends in the Glee Club, by the beginning of season 4 Finn finally was able to discover his true ion in life. He started coaching the Glee Club and found that he is an amazing teacher and a true leader.
Burt: To Build A Solid Relationship With His Son
When we are first introduced to Kurt’s dad, Burt, in season one it becomes immediately clear that the pair do not have the best relationship. Burt is often a bit standoffish with Kurt because he feels like he doesn’t know how to connect with him or how to him.
However, as the seasons go by Burt can push past his awkwardness and forms a deep connection with Kurt. He becomes the loving, ive, and present parent Kurt needed and can enjoy his time with his son like he always wanted.
Tina: To Be Recognized For Her Talent
Throughout Tina’s time in the Glee Club, she always felt under-appreciated. In season one, when she first s the club she is often upset that she never gets to perform any solos and always has to sing back up to Rachel Berry.
As the seasons go by, Tina begins to perform more in the Glee Club and performs many solos for the group. By the end of season 3, when the New Directioners from the year above her graduate, she takes on a lot more responsibility in the club and gets a lot more recognition for her vocal abilities and contributions to the group.
Artie: To Dance
Artie reveals in the season one episode “Dream On,” that his true dream in life was to be able to dance but because of his wheelchair he feels like he can never achieve it.
While Artie wanted to dance without his wheelchair and on his two feet, he still does get to dance and perform in his wheelchair. At one point, the whole glee club even performs a dance number in wheelchairs. By the end of the series, Artie can grow an appreciation for what he can do in his wheelchair and enjoy dancing in his way.
Kurt: To Find Love
In season one Kurt was just beginning to come to with his sexuality and develop a crush on his fellow New Directioner Finn. Kurt quickly realizes that Finn will never be able to return his feelings but still finds himself struggling to find someone to date as the only openly gay kid at his school.
Thankfully, in season 2 Kurt meets Blaine Anderson and the pair form a connection. By the end of the second season, they start dating and eventually get married in the final season of the series.
Rachel: To Become A Broadway Star
Every single person that meets Rachel Berry knows that her one true dream in life is to be a star. She dedicated her entire life to working toward her dream of starring on Broadway. Every time she makes any decisions she had to consider how it will impact her future career.
Throughout the series, Rachel’s vocal abilities continue to improve and she finds success as a lead singer for the New Directions and as a performer at NYADA. Rachel even lands her dream job playing Fanny Bryce in “Funny Girl” on Broadway. In the final episode, it is revealed that Rachel wins a Tony award for Best Actress, which proves that she truly achieved her dream of being a star.
