God of War is finally getting a live-action adaptation after almost two decades of being stuck in development hell, and though it's in the early stages, there's plenty of news. The God of War video game series began in 2005, and follows the titular god, Kratos, who was tricked into killing his family by Ares. Kratos attempts to get revenge, but he must first battle through hoards of Olympian gods. The series cleverly mixes Greek and Norse mythology, and the franchise and lore are only getting deeper and more epic in scope with every installment.

While concrete details are few and far between when it comes to the live-action God of War cast and story, there has at least been news about who isn't playing Kratos. Producers have also promised that the series will be faithful to the source material too. It will be a long time before a live-action God of War trailer arrives, but with the God of War game director involved, and the budget that Amazon will undoubtedly invest in the God of War series, the show will be worth the wait.

A Development Update On The Long-Awaited Series

Kratos and Atreus stand together against a snowy landscape in God of War Ragnarok

Several months after the series hired legendary showrunner Ronald D. Moore, the latest news arrives as a development update for the God of War TV show. While appearing on Katee Sackhoff's podcast, The Sackhoff Show, Moore dropped some interesting tidbits about how things are progressing. Perhaps most interesting of all, Moore let slip that Amazon Prime Video has already ordered two seasons of the series, though that's all Moore would say on the subject.

Moore talked about entering the writer's room and professed his ignorance of gaming in general. "I’m not a gamer, so it’s even more like, ‘Okay, I’ve never done this before,'" said the legendary TV maven, though there's little doubt that he'll offer a strong guiding influence. On a more humorous note, Moore also confessed to having tried and failed to play the games, saying, "I’ve tried. I’m not a gamer, you know... the controllers now […] ‘Press R1.’ And I’m like, which one is R1? Oh, I’m dead.

"Right now I'm working on the adaptation of this video game called God of War, a big title in the gaming world that Amazon has ordered two seasons of, and they have asked me to come in. I'm literally in the writers room and working on that. That's my new thing […] And I’m not a gamer, so it’s even more like, ‘Okay, I’ve never done this before.’"

The Live-Action God Of War Show Is Confirmed

Amazon Prime Video Announced The Project In 2022

Kratos wields two bloody swords as he approaches a massive fortress in God of War

The live-action God of War show is confirmed and has been since 2022. The live-action God of War confirmation arrived in May 2022 during Sony Pictures' investor meeting at the end of its second quarter of the year. During the presentation, Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan (via a Resetera ) confirmed the series is in development and will be released on Amazon Prime Video. This comes as a relief following so many failed attempts to adapt the beloved video game series.

The God of War show is confirmed as "in development" but it hasn't been given an official green light yet.

A creative shakeup happened behind-the-scenes in late 2024, and legendary writer/producer/showrunner Ronald D. Moore was brought in to oversee the series. Moore's extensive experience on shows like Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica, and Outlander make him uniquely suited, though it's unclear how far along development has progressed. In March 2025, Moore announced that Amazon Prime Video wants two seasons of the series.

Live-Action God Of War Cast

No Cast Are Known Yet

With the development status of God of War still somewhat unclear, it will likely be a while before any serious casting is done for the project.

There is no solid news about the live-action God of War cast, but there are a couple of promising candidates for the lead role of Kratos. Jason Momoa's name has been thrown around for the role in the past, but the Aquaman star is not confirmed. Another possibility is Christopher Judge, who has voiced Kratos in every game. Judge isn't just a voice actor, as he has starred in action sci-fi shows such as Stargate SG-1, and has plenty of live-action experience.

Perhaps the leading candidate since the project's announcement was wrestler-turned-actor Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, but rumors of his casting as Kratos have been dispelled by the game's director. With the development status of God of War still somewhat unclear, it will likely be a while before any serious casting is done for the project.

It's hard to speculate what the live-action God of War story will be given that the franchise includes eight games, a couple of which are reboots. However, while Amazon Studios' Head of Television, Vernon Sanders, didn't give anything away about the live-action God of War story, he did have positive news (via Collider). Sanders confirmed that the series is faithful to the video games, calling the first season, "Incredibly true to the source material, and also compelling on its own."
