Prime Video's God of War TV show was first announced back in 2022, with Rafe Judkins set to serve as showrunner and executive producer. Story details weren't revealed for the series, but the video game tells the story of Kratos, the former Greek God of War, as he embarks on a quest through Midgard with his son, Atreus, encountering various creatures from Norse mythology along the way.
A new report from Variety now reveals that Prime Video is choosing to start over with its God of War show. Judkins, along with executive producers Hawk Ostby and Mark Fergus, have exited the project, with the report claiming that they had completed multiple scripts. Amazon, however, together with Sony Pictures Television, have decided to take the show in an entirely new creative direction, and will be hiring a new showrunner and writing team.
Not all of those attached to the show have left, however, as Santa Monica Studio’s studio creative director Cory Barlog remains onboard as an executive producer. Yumi Yang, also of Santa Monica Studios, remains attached, as do Playstation Productions’ Asad Qizilbash and Roy Lee of Vertigo.
Judkins wrote the script for Uncharted (2022) starring Tom Holland. That movie, which earned mixed reviews, is also based on a popular Playstation video game franchise.
What The New Update Means For The God Of War Show
When Will The Prime Video Show Actually Release?
The God of War show wasn't announced with a release date back in 2022, but any tentative development and production timeline that could have been surmised before is evidently now off the table. It's important to note that confirmation that a project is in development is different from a project actually being given a green light. Some projects spend a long time in development before getting made, while others sometimes don't get made at all if a compelling story can't be decided upon.

God of War Ragnarök's Ending Explained (In Detail)
God of War Ragnarok's story leaves a lot for the player to unpack. Its ending has complex emotions and an unexpected first for the God of War series.
This entire development process is starting over again with God of War, which means it could be several years before the show gets the green light to move forward. If it gets the green light, it will then need to be filmed and go through what is sure to be a long post-production process due to the game's fantastical setting. While it's hard to provide a release estimate at such early development stages, the God of War show may not be arriving until 2028 or beyond at this point.
The most recent game in the franchise is critically-acclaimed God of War Ragnarok (2022). It's not yet clear what the next game in the franchise will be.
Our Take On God Of War's Development Setback
The Show's Major Delay Could Be For The Best
While the delay to the God of War show is sure to come as a disappointment for many, it's clear that Amazon and Sony Pictures Television weren't confident in what had been developed so far. The fact that they'd make such a drastic decision suggests that they're committed to getting this adaptation right instead of rushing something out that won't meet audience expectations.
While it would have been exciting to get more story, character, and casting details regarding the show, such announcements are now likely to be quite a ways off. Hopefully, however, this wiping the slate clean will be what the God of War show needs in order to eventually succeed.
