The developers behind Kratos using his signature Leviathan Axe and Olympian strength to beat one into submission against a rock wall and Atreus locking opponents in place with his trusty sonic arrows. A “Cursed” Grim tries to take Kratos down with some kind of toxic spit, but the Ghost of Sparda soon retaliates by throwing his axe into an explosive pot. God Of War Ragnarok Adds New Combat And Shield Options

It is during this God of War Ragnarok gameplay demo that Sheth and Yeh describe some of the changes made to God of War (2018)’s already well-regarded combat system. For example, the Triangle button was used to recall Kratos’s Leviathan Axe after throwing it, but Ragnarok adds a new function for when the Ghost of Sparta is already holding his blade. Dubbed Weapon Signature Moves, these attacks allow Kratos to infuse his Leviathan Axe or Blades of Chaos with ice or fire magic respectively for increased damage. Kratos’s shield is also being revamped in the form of two new shield types. The Dauntless Shield allows players to unleash a counter-attack following a successful last-minute parry, while the Stonewall Shield trades parrying for a shockwave once the shield blocks enough enemy blows.

These new upgrades to Kratos’s already impressive repertoire seem to add an element of strategy to God of War Ragnarok’s combat, with players having to choose which shield and Weapon Signature Move to use for a given situation or play style. Fans won't have to wait too much longer to try these new attacks and gear out for themselves, as God of War Ragnarok will finally be released on November 9 - giving Kratos even more chances to play with his food in the heat of battle.
