With Kratos, will die in the God of War game. It's unlikely that Kratos would cease to be a character in future God of War games entirely, as he is the face of the franchise. However, there are many theories as to how Kratos could appear in the future even if he does die in Ragnarok. Additionally, it's possible Kratos's son, Atreus, could take over the role of the lead protagonist. Atreus was 11 years old in God of War and is estimated to be 14 years old in Ragnarok, so future installments could include a young adult Atreus navigating a monster-filled world without his father.

The first seven God of War games featured Greek mythology. 2018's God of War was the first game in the series to be based on Norse mythology, with 2022's Ragnarok set in the same realm filled with mythological monsters and gods. Alongside this change of setting from Greece to Scandinavia, came a shift from Kratos being the sole protagonist to sharing the journey with his son, Atreus. Although Kratos remained the only playable character, it's rumored Atreus may become playable in God of War Ragnarok.

At the end of 2018's God of War, Kratos and Atreus observe a series of murals, one of which appears to foretell Kratos's death, showing him taking his last breath in his son's arms. Surrounding the mural are Norse runes which, thanks to God of War fans and internet sleuths, have been translated. The runes are ominous and foreboding, featuring the words "death", "father", and "betrayed", suggesting that if the painting at the end of God of War is Kratos, then a betrayal led to his demise. Some fans were quick to point out that Kratos' death might not be permanent - as he is a god after all - and he's cheated death in previous games. Alternatively, Kratos could remain dead, but continue to appear in future games as an apparition to Atreus, or through memories.

One of the most interesting theories, shared on Atreus' mother in God of War, Laufey, also ed away, so Kratos could have the chance to be reunited with her as well. The idea of Kratos pursuing a Hades-style escape is exciting, battling underworld monsters along the way in a bid to reunite with his loved ones.

The theory that Kratos will die in a future God of War game holds substantial weight, based on the in-game hints to this effect at the end of 2018's God of War. The dying man in the mural does bear a striking resemblance to Kratos. If the mural does depict Kratos' death, it may not be permanent, as he is a god and has cheated death in the past. However, if Kratos doesn't rise from the dead after Ragnarok, he could still play a prominent role in the franchise, thanks to flashbacks or cut scenes. One thing is certain: Kratos is the face of God of War Ragnarök and the whole franchise, and that's unlikely to change anytime soon.
