Sony finally revealed footage of the shown during the latest PlayStation Showcase, provided a much closer look at what the title has to offer. The teaser trailer reveals some new faces in the game, and at the very end of it is a mysterious girl.
Some viewers may be wondering who this girl is, since she’s actually a character who will play a very important role in the future of both Atreus and the Nine Realms. In fact, she will very likely be the mother of the creatures that cause Ragnarök. Thankfully, after the reveal, developers took a closer look at her and some of the other aspects and characters in God Of War Ragnarök.
According to the developers, her name is Angrboda, and she’s one of the last Giants. She tells someone offscreen, presumably Kratos and Atreus, “You’ll get your answers soon enough. Well, some of them.” Assuming the character follows the same life trajectory in God Of War Ragnarök as her mythical counterpart, she may be one of the instigators of Ragnarök via her children with Atreus, also known as Loki.
God Of War Ragnarok Will Introduce Angrboda, Atreus’s Love Interest
In Norse mythology, Angrboda is the consort of Loki and the mother of three of his children: The wolf, Fenrir; the serpent Jormungandr, and the death goddess Hel. Both Fenrir and Jormungandr play pivotal roles in Ragnarök, with Jormungandr killing Thor with his poison as Thor kills him, and Fenrir killing Odin and being subsequently killed by Odin’s son Vidar. Loki’s not exactly a monogamist in the myths, as he has children with at least two other beings: A son, Narfi, with his wife, the goddess Sigyn, and the horse Sleipnir, whom he conceived with the stallion Svadilfari.
While she didn't appear in the PS4's God of War, Angrboda was indirectly referenced. An image of Angrboda can be seen in Jormungandr’s Jotnar Shrine - or at least it’s presumably her since the serpent is nursing from her. Jormungandr has already appeared in the previous game, and at the time there was no indication that he had any relation to Atreus. It wasn’t revealed until later in the game that Atreus is Loki. Thor is set to appear in Ragnarök, as he can be heard in the trailer, and also gets his own character poster, but Odin, Vidar, and Fenrir have yet to be seen.
What role Angrboda will play in God of War Ragnarök is not yet clear, but she seems friendly. Although, this demeanor may change over the course of the game. Players will likely see whether she and Atreus become as close as their mythical counterparts when the game launches sometime next year.
