The Spartan warrior Kratos in his quest for vengeance against various Greek gods when the original god of war Ares tricks him into killing his family. As he sets off killing the Greek gods, Kratos eventually becomes the new god of war.
First launching in 2005, the God of War video game franchise has consisted of eight games, including the original trilogy, the 2013 prequel God of War: Ascension, the mid-series titles Chains of Olympus, Ghost of Sparta and Betrayal and the 2018 revival shifting to a Norse setting. The majority of the games have received rave reviews from critics and gamers alike, with both the 2005 and 2018 God of War games winning multiple Game of the Year awards upon their releases. As the God of War franchise continues to enjoy its new life with the Norse era with the sequel God of War: Ragnarok, it's now gearing up to make its way to a new medium.
With the second financial quarter nearing a close, Sony Pictures held an investor briefing discussing their plans for the future. During the presentation, Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan (via a Resetera ) reportedly confirmed that the God of War series at Prime Video is in development. Additionally, Ryan reportedly revealed a Horizon series being developed for Netflix and a Gran Turismo series for an unknown platform.
Various attempts have been made over the years to adapt God of War for the screen, with a film first entering development in 2005 at Universal Studios. After seven years of languishing in development hell, the film seemingly started gaining steam in 2012 when The Collector duo Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan were hired to adapt the game for a film, having turned in a script shortly thereafter and looking for a large budget of $150 million, though it would eventually find itself scrapped. Word of the God of War series first began swirling this past March, though at the time it was only reported to be in negotiations between Sony and Prime Video with The Expanse creators Mark Fergus & Hawk Ostby and The Wheel of Time showrunner Rafe Judkins attached.
With only a couple of months under its belt, it's understandable Ryan didn't share further details for the God of War series at Prime Video, but the confirmation of its ongoing development should come as exciting news for fans of the video game franchise. The show's development also comes as PlayStation Productions continues to ramp up its development slate after the success of the Uncharted movie, with other projects in the works including film adaptations of Ghost of Tsushima and Jak and Daxter as well as series adaptations of Twisted Metal, Gran Turismo and The Last of Us at HBO. With a large library of SIE yet to be explored, only time will tell what other adaptations gamers can look forward to gracing their screens in the future.
