More MonsterVerse Titans may seek to challenge the alpha in the aftermath of Godzilla vs. Kong. Kong may have fallen to him in battle, but that doesn’t mean the Titans have learned their lesson when it comes to taking on Godzilla.

Godzilla has proven his might on multiple occasions, but time has shown that this matters little. Godzilla proved how powerful he was by taking down Ghidorah in front of a crowd of Titan spectators, and did so again when he beat Kong, the only MonsterVerse Titan who didn’t readily accept Gojira as the alpha after the Titans seem to understand that he’s a force to be reckoned with, some have been brave enough to tangle with him anyway. In the Godzilla vs. Kong prequel graphic novel, Godzilla: Dominion, both Scylla and Tiamat rebelled against him, with the former being one of the Titans who bowed down to him at the end of King of the Monsters.

It could be that even more of the MonsterVerse’s Titans will rise up against him in the months and years to come. Godzilla sent them back into hibernation ahead of his fight with Kong, but they could always emerge again. Most may purposely avoid combat with him. Behemoth, for example, who is confirmed to be a benevolent creature, has no reason to make trouble for the alpha. And Scylla, who lost badly in their fight, is unlikely to want a rematch. However, there are a few who might pose problems in the MonsterVerse’s future. Here are the Titans who could potentially challenge Godzilla for alpha status.

Abaddon

Abaddon Angel

There are eight Titans in the MonsterVerse who are currently a mystery, all of which being creatures who were confirmed to exist via a monitor screen in King of the Monsters. Since no details are known about them specifically, the only clues about who they are come from their locations as well as the gods and folklore legends they share their names with. The mythological connections of some of these monsters (like Sekhmet and a few others) imply that they may have peaceful intentions for the planet, but the same can’t be said for Abaddon, who was hibernating somewhere in Wyoming prior to Ghidorah’s call. The Bible calls him “the Destroyer” and the king of an army of locusts. He’s also regarded by many as an angel of death. For Monarch to give the Wyoming Titan this moniker, he must be a powerful force with destructive tendencies. A creature with his level of notoriety certainly sounds like a monster who would be at odds with Godzilla’s peace-keeping nature.

Kong

Godzilla vs. Kong did offer a definitive winner, but that doesn’t necessarily mean Kong will never try to fight Godzilla again. After all, he fought hard (particularly in the second round) and held his own quite well. The two are now living in two totally different corners of the MonsterVerse now that Kong has moved to the Hollow Earth, but if circumstances force them together again, a rematch could occur. He dropped the axe the last time he saw Godzilla, but it’s possible that a fully-rested Kong will be a bit more eager to fight. This could happen if the MonsterVerse were to make Godzilla vs. Kong 2, or it could just a be a brief battle that takes place in a proper Godzilla & Kong team-up movie.

Yamata no Orochi

Yamata no Orochi Japanese mythology

In Japanese mythology, Yamata no Orochi is a fearsome, eight-headed dragon. Whether or not the MonsterVerse’s take on him is a dragon remains to be seen, but Godzilla: King of the Monsters director Mike Dougherty has confirmed on Instagram that he does possess eight heads. Regardless of what this creature is, this multi-headed monster could very well be an incredibly formidable creature. It’s hard to imagine him being as strong as Ghidorah of course, but he might have the strength to put up a good fight against Godzilla.

Typhon

Zeus Typhon

Yamata no Orochi isn’t the only Titan who could turn out to be an evil, multi-headed dragon like Ghidorah. A monster who might have even more heads than Orochi is Typhon. In ancient Greek texts, Typhon was depicted as a serpent monster who sported a hundred heads. During a clash with Zeus, he was defeated by one of the god’s thunderbolts. Typhon’s reputation as a colossal villain and a foe of the gods in Greek mythology may have something to do with the reason for why the MonsterVerse Titan shares this name. The Typhon mentioned in King of the Monsters could be a malevolent beast whose actions will eventually make him an enemy of Godzilla.

Quetzalcoatl

Quetzalcoatl

The Aztecs viewed Quetzalcoatl as a colorful, feathered serpent. If that description sounds familiar, that’s because it’s a close match for the Warbats in Godzilla vs. Kong. The resemblance could be a coincidence, or it could be a sign that the unseen King of the Monsters Titan from Peru is a Warbat himself. If so, he too could be a vicious creature who attacks both humans and fellow Titans (including Godzilla).

Mokele-Mbembe

A screen in King of the Monsters showed a Monarch facility in Sudan where a Titan called Mokele-Mbembe was being monitored. Unfortunately, there was so much smoke that it was impossible to see what he looked like. That being said, he’s not a mystery in the same vein as Yamata no Orochi, Abaddon, and the others since he was described in great detail in the movie’s novelization. He was said to be an enormous, earless elephant with two tails and a trunk that can be used offensively, and a crocodile-like snout lined with thousands of sharp teeth. In the book, he aggressively went after and even devoured some of the humans. Based on this aspect of his character (and the arsenal of weapons he has at his disposal), Mokele-Mbembe might be willing to rebel against the alpha’s reign.

Rodan

Roden looks up at Godzilla in Godzilla King of the Monsters

Rodan being the first to bow down to Godzilla in King of the Monsters indicated that he could become a loyal minion to the alpha, but Godzilla: Dominion and the Godzilla vs. Kong novelization has proven that this showing of respect doesn’t mean as much as originally thought. Some, like Scylla, may have just made this gesture in the interest of self-preservation, and one Titan who may fall into the same category is Rodan. Falling in behind Ghidorah immediately after losing and switching sides to Godzilla when Ghidorah was defeated may mean that his allegiance doesn’t actually lie with anyone. All signs point to Rodan being the type who fights for the winning side only. If he ever comes to the conclusion that Godzilla can actually be beaten, there’s a chance he could try to dethrone the current alpha.
