What’s been seen so far of Godzilla vs. Kong raises the possibility that Godzilla could defeat Kong on two separate occasions in the movie. That could happen, considering that the two Titans will clearly fight more than once in the MonsterVerse film.
The trailers for Godzilla vs. Kong have previewed the highly anticipated showdown between the two rival alphas. Thanks to a massive size upgrade and the addition of an axe made from Godzilla’s dorsal fins, Kong is no longer the heavy underdog he once was. The first full trailer made it abundantly clear that despite Godzilla’s fearsome reputation, Kong can hold his own against him in a fight, and possibly win as well. The axe, which has the ability to catch Godzilla’s atomic breath, takes away his biggest weapon, and may make it easier for Kong to dethrone the King of the Monsters.
However, details about Godzilla vs. Kong indicate that despite the improvements made to Kong, Gojira stands a good chance at winning not once, but twice in the movie. First of all, Godzilla is well-positioned to win the battle that takes place both on and near the aircraft carrier. Godzilla almost killing Ghidorah in the ocean in Godzilla: King of the Monsters proves that he has the advantage in the water. The conditions of this fight favor Godzilla, who will naturally be at home in the water. The devastating blow that Godzilla landed on Kong while atop the battleship may just be the first of many hits that he’ll get on Kong during this fight.
It’s worth noting that Kong doesn’t seem to have the axe at this point in time, and this provides further evidence for Godzilla emerging victorious here. It seems likely that Kong may acquire it while exploring the Hollow Earth tunnels, where more about the Titan War between their ancestors will be uncovered. It seems that the purpose of the axe in the story is to give Kong an edge over Godzilla, but it would feel quite pointless if Kong wins their first fight. If Kong can take down Godzilla without a weapon, then there would be no reason for the axe in the first place. Godzilla winning the initial round would explain why Kong needs it.
Of course, Kong having this powerful axe doesn’t mean he’ll get the final victory in the movie. The original crossover, King Kong vs. Godzilla, saw Godzilla win their first full round and Kong win the rematch, but the MonsterVerse doesn’t have to follow the same formula. If the movie has three fights, there could be at least one where Kong comes out on top, but the last battle could go either way. One show in the trailer shows the axe on the ground, which suggests it’ll be off the table during one particular standoff. If it’s Godzilla who wins, it could be his second triumph over Kong in the film. Going in this direction would be one way that Godzilla vs. Kong can offer a definitive answer about which monster truly deserves to be the alpha of the Titans.
