Godzilla: King of the Monsters may have secretly set up Madison Russell (Millie Bobby Brown) to be the MonsterVerse’s most important human character. Thus far, that person has been Dr. Serizawa (Ken Watanabe), but he died saving Godzilla in the 2019 sequel. Going forward, the MonsterVerse may lean on a different person to fill that hole, and possibly connect to a classic Toho character.
The beginning of Godzilla: King of the Monsters introduced audiences to Madison, the teenage daughter of Mark (Kyle Chandler) and Emma (Vera Farmiga). Along with her mother, she was seemingly kidnapped by Jonah (Charles Dance) and his band of eco-terrorists. A standoff at Monarch’s outpost in Antarctica where King Ghidorah was being held revealed that she was actually a willing accomplice in the plot to unleash the Titans. Apparently, she went along with their scheme out of loyalty to her mother, but she eventually turned against her and used the Orca to lure Ghidorah to Boston. It was her actions that led to Godzilla’s final battle with the three-headed dragon.
A scene in the Godzilla vs. Kong, since it’s been confirmed that Madison will return. It could be that Madison is the MonsterVerse counterpart of Miki Saegusa.
In the Heisei series of Godzilla movies, Miki was a psychic woman whose powers allowed her to feel Godzilla’s thoughts. Because of this ability, she knew things about Godzilla that no one else did. She could even telepathically pinpoint Godzilla’s location, which made her an asset for the government. Plus, she helped make Godzilla into a bit of a sympathetic character, as she often reminded the other humans in the movies that Godzilla has feelings too. When everyone else in the movie was focused on bringing down Godzilla, Miki was the only one who truly felt conflicted, because she understood him better than anyone.
Miki is easily more important to the franchise than any other human character. On top of everything that she brought to the story, she made a total of six big screen appearances, whereas most are limited to just one movie. Godzilla movies typically start over with new casts, but Miki was a constant in the 1990s. She appeared in Godzilla vs. Biollante, Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah, Godzilla vs. Mothra, Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II, Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla, and Godzilla vs. Destoroyah.
If the MonsterVerse utilizes Madison in a way that’s similar to Miki, she could be just as essential to the stories of Godzilla, Mothra, and the other Titans as Miki was. Telepathy being a real form of communication between Titans and humans was suggested in the credits, so it does feel like a possible direction for the MonsterVerse to take in Godzilla vs. Kong. If so, Monarch may rely on Madison in the struggles to come.
