Three robotic Titans could the MonsterVerse in Godzilla vs. Kong. None have been officially confirmed, but two – Mechagodzilla and Mecha-Ghidorah – have toys on the way, and one more may be hiding in the movie somewhere.
A toy leak in January 2020 may have revealed Godzilla’s second-biggest rival in Godzilla vs. Kong. He was also spotted through a blueprint in the trailer and in recent merchandise. Another new addition to the MonsterVerse from Toho’s library that’s being discussed is Mecha-King Ghidorah. The cyborg alien, whose first and only appearance was in Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah, is heavily rumored to be making his MonsterVerse debut in Godzilla vs. Kong. This is based on reports from official set visits that have described a Ghidorah skull being hooked up with wires and adorned with mechanical parts. Plus, it’s worth noting Mecha-Ghidorah was made possible by the Godzilla: King of the Monsters post-credits scene that saw Ghidorah’s severed head fall into the hands of Jonah (Charles Dance).
On top of Mechagodzilla and Mecha-Ghidorah, a third robot Titan could be getting involved in the action as well. In the newspaper clippings found in the King of the Monsters credits, the article titled “Monarch Boosts Forces Around Skull Island” mentions that the organization was working on the construction of “mechanized giant” at some point in the past. For the longest time, it was presumed that this was a Mechagodzilla tease, but it may have had nothing to do with him at all. That’s because it looks like Mechagodzilla is built by APEX, not Monarch. The scientist standing in front of the blueprint that resembles Mechagodzilla in the trailer is confirmed to work for Godzilla vs. Kong’s human villains, APEX. This provides strong evidence that APEX are the ones controlling Mechagodzilla. That does make sense, given that they are a company that specializes in cybernetics.
If APEX built Mechagodzilla, then Monarch’s “mechanized giant” must be a different Titan. If this line was meant to set something up, the robot in question could be officially unveiled in Godzilla vs. Kong. An original Titan is always a possibility of course, but not a given. If it is a Toho property, then the options for who it could be are limited. Aside from Mechagodzilla and Mecha-Ghidorah, the only two robotic kaiju associated with Godzilla are Moguera and Jet Jaguar. Considering the silly and fun nature of Jet Jaguar, he doesn’t really work for the MonsterVerse tonally, which leaves Moguera, the robot that helped Gojira save the world in 1994’s Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla. Moguera has a distinctive design that features drill-shaped weapons in place of hands and a plasma cannon on his chest.
Since Toho’s Moguera was built to be a force for good, it would make sense for his MonsterVerse counterpart to be designed by Monarch. If he does appear in Godzilla vs. Kong, he could have a small role as a defensive measure employed by Monarch against APEX’s Mechagodzilla or Mecha-Ghidorah. It could be that Moguera will have to hold them off while Godzilla and Kong are busy fighting each other.
