As the King of Monsters, Godzilla has little concern for the humans attempting to stop his destruction. Almost every Godzilla film after the first has brought the world's most famous kaiju into conflict with another impressively sized monster. While this approach is exhilarating to watch, it can make the character difficult to adapt to other mediums, as the spectacle of seeing giant monsters fight isn't the same on the page as it is on the screen. Marvel found the perfect solution to this problem when they acquired the character's license in the 1970s. Marvel's Godzilla was fully integrated into the Marvel Universe--which made him a threat even the Avengers and Fantastic Four couldn't ignore.

In the Marvel Universe, Godzilla ended up frozen in a block of ice after his rampage through Japan in 1956. When Godzilla wakes up in the modern age, he goes on a path of destruction through the United States. S.H.I.E.L.D. attempts to take control of the situation by establishing the Godzilla Squad (yes, really).

Though the team is led by famous S.H.I.E.L.D. agents like Dum Dum Dugan and Jimmy Woo, the team's most important member is undoubtedly Rob Takiguchi, the grandson of the scientist who accidentally created Godzilla. After narrowly diverting Godzilla from completely decimating Seattle and San Francisco the Godzilla Squad contracts Stark Industries to build a giant robot... named Red Ronin. Rob takes command of Red Ronin but refuses to kill the King of Monsters out of sympathy, letting it escape. Godzilla inadvertently saves the team several times throughout the adventure as he defeats opposing Kaiju. Things truly turn around once the team enlists the help of Ant-Man to lend them a shrinking gas. After untold destruction throughout America, the Godzilla Squad finally shrink and captures Godzilla, though they don't contain him for long.

Thor and Godzilla in Marvel Comic

Now the size of a normal lizard, Godzilla escapes into the sewers of Manhattan where he fights sewer rats before growing to human size. Much like the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, he walks through Manhattan in a trench coat and fedora as the Godzilla Squad searches frantically for him. Growing slightly larger once more, Godzilla makes his way to the Museum of Natural History where the monster ends up battling with the Fantastic Four. Mr. Fantastic manages to send him back in time, however, that is only temporary. When Godzilla arrives back in the present, he is full-sized and ready to destroy New York, prompting a response from the Avengers.

Iron-Man, Vision, and Thor try their best to subdue the beast but even with the help of the Fantastic Four, they can only mitigate the damage he does. It's only when Rob apologizes to Godzilla and begs for him to end his rampage that the monster stops. The Godzilla Squad, Avengers, and Fantastic Four all think Rob's plan is doomed for failure, but the sincerity of Rob's speech calms the monumental beast. With a promise that he will be left in peace as long as he doesn't hurt anybody, Godzilla swims into the ocean, but not before Spider-Man manages to snap a few pictures.

Godzilla Fight vs Avengers Fantastic Four

Though Marvel subsequently lost the rights to Godzilla, the comic is still considered canon in the Marvel Universe. The Red Ronin mech has appeared in multiple storylines, most recently being destroyed in the 2009 storyline, Agents of Wakanda even had a similar ending to this Godzilla series, with a character talking the monstrous Fin Fang Foom out of a rampage.

As astounding as Godzilla's time in the Marvel Universe might seem, none of it was unusual for one of Marvel's licensed comics. There was a time when properties like Transformers and G.I. Joe were considered fully canon parts of the Marvel Universe. Even a relatively obscure toy-line like Rom: Space Knight was treated like an event comic in its last few issues, with every corner of the Marvel Universe teaming up against the series' main antagonists. Godzilla's rampage throughout New York and his fight with the Avengers show that even in a universe with demi-gods and superheroes, Godzilla remains a force of nature.
