Warning: Contains SPOILERS for Mothra: Queen of the Monsters! new addition to the Monsterverse.

In an interview with Mothra is a giant, monstrous moth. However, the two couldn’t be any different. Mothra is a benevolent kaiju who protects humanity, whereas Antra quite literally brings the human race - and even the monster race - to the edge of extinction.

The interview covered everything from Campbell’s inspiration behind this new Mothra series to her personal soft vinyl Godzilla figure collection. But perhaps the most fascinating part of the interview was what Sophie Campbell had to say about this all-new kaiju, Antra.

Godzilla.com: Tell us all about the new kaiju Antra. What is it? How did you come up with it? Did you design it? The fandom must know!

Sofie Campbell: The main reason behind Antra was that I love ants, haha. We bounced around ideas for other antagonists like Battra or Ghidorah but ultimately it felt right to create a totally new monster, and obviously it had to be an ant and obviously her name had to follow the same naming convention as Mothra; she's an ant so Ant + ra!

I did a bunch of initial concept sketches for Antra but none of them clicked until Matt did his own take on it. He has a way of giving things a grandeur that I struggle with, and he really nailed it. Antra's design is about equal parts me and Matt. She is our baby.

Who Is Antra? Sophie Campbell’s Original Godzilla Monster, Explained

Antra Kills Mothra & Causes Armageddon

Antra, a new Titan introduced in Godzilla continuity.

While little is known about Antra, or the entire Mother: Queen of the Monsters series as a whole, the parts that are known speak volumes to whom this new monster is, and how she will be one of the most impactful kaiju in the entire Toho catalog. As Campbell herself explained in the interview with Godzilla.com, Antra is a totally new monster, which allows her future to be completely limitless in the Godzilla Universe. Plus, fans are offered a great deal of insight into who Antra is from the official synopsis of Mothra: Queen of the Monsters #1 from IDW Publishing:

Mothra has fallen after a fearsome battle with a terrifying new kaiju, ANTRA. Without its protector, the world has entered into a state of desolation. Kaiju roam freely, and what remains of humankind has been forced into hiding.

But all hope is not lost! Mira is a young woman living in the wasteland, who believes she lost her entire family in Mothra's final stand. That is, until her missing twin shows up at her door with two fairies! If her sister is to be believed, Mira might hold the key to the rebirth of Mothra and the Earth's return to normalcy. They just have to travel back in time and get its egg from the Jurassic period first.

The official synopsis confirms that Mothra - at the very start of her own series - is actually defeated and killed by the newly-introduced Antra. This is immensely significant, as it sets in motion the entire events of the series. But it also proves just how powerful and globally impactful Antra truly is. When Antra beat Mothra, it didn’t stop there. The ant-like kaiju continued her destructive path around the globe, and even ushered in a new era of kaiju supremacy. Mothra is one of the few kaiju who fight for humanity, so with her gone, Antra was free to bring about armageddon.

While it isn’t too rare to see a world-ending kaiju being presented as a villain in any given Godzilla continuity, it is a rare sight to witness them actually bringing about the end of the world. Sure, the likes of King Ghidorah, Zoospora, and even the Monsterverse’s MUTOs had the potential to bring the world to its knees, but all of them were stopped before that could happen. But now, Sophie Campbell has brought a new kind of kaiju to the world of Godzilla, one far deadlier than anything fans have seen before.

How Antra Would Be the Perfect New Monster for the Monsterverse

Antra is a World-Ending Monster, Perfect for a Godzilla X Kong Movie

Since Antra has already proven herself to be an immensely impactful kaiju - even before the first issue of Mothra: Queen of the Monsters has even come out - it only makes sense that she should eventually be brought into the Monsterverse continuity. As the Monsterverse continues to grow, introducing threats that are more deadly than the last with every ing installment, Antra is the perfect fit for a future film. Any kaiju who can not only kill Mothra, but also bring about the end of the world is definitely worthy of getting the big-screen treatment - and the Monsterverse should do so immediately.

Imagine, a giant ant-monster raging through cities around the world, killing Mothra before ushering in a new age of evil kaiju, only to face-off against Godzilla and Kong where she will prove herself even further as a monster that is not to be messed with. Truly, the story writes itself, and it’s such a cool idea that there’s no way the Monsterverse will want to on adapting Antra to its cinematic universe. A giant ant-monster whooping Mothra, Kong, and Godzilla while bringing the world to its knees? How awesome is that?!

2025 is going to be a massive year for Godzilla's comic book fans, with the kaiju - and his friends - starring in new series from IDW and Marvel.

There is a lot to be excited about with the introduction of this all-new monster, and while the prospect of Antra being brought into the live-action Godzilla Universe is a cool thought, that’s not the only reason fans should be excited about Antra’s debut. Even if Antra never makes it into the Monsterverse (which, again, would be a huge-missed opportunity), she will still wreak havoc in Mothra: Queen of the Monsters, where she will prove herself to be an epic addition to Godzilla continuity.
