A synopsis for the Godzilla vs. Kong sequel confirms that the two are about to face “a world-ending threat so terrifying that neither could survive alone.” Based on what was shown in the teaser trailer for the new movie, that “threat” has a surprising source. The creature shown in the footage appears to be a member of Kong’s MonsterVerse species. Aside from the fact that Kong’s species is supposedly extinct, what makes this reveal so interesting is the fact that Godzilla has already demonstrated his physical superiority to Kong’s kind. Yet somehow, there’s a giant ape in the MonsterVerse strong enough to go toe-to-toe with him and Kong.

A likely explanation for the new villain’s power level can be found in his design. The trailer carefully emphasizes the ape Titan’s blue eyes, a characteristic not shared by Kong. Not only are they a different color from Kong’s, but they glow unnaturally. This creates comparisons to the blue atomic energy that flows within Godzilla’s veins and grants the King of the Monsters his signature atomic breath ability. It would seem, given this connection, that Godzilla vs. Kong 2’s villain possesses Godzilla’s power.
Although this would be a major addition to the lore surrounding Kong’s species, it’s not one that would come without proper setup. Godzilla’s power is the same as the hidden Hollow Earth energy source APEX was after in Godzilla vs. Kong.
