A detail in the Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire teaser trailer explains why its new villain is so powerful. He hasn’t participated in a single onscreen fight, yet it’s already become obvious that he’s a force to be reckoned with. After all, any Titan capable of forcing a Godzilla-Kong team-up would have to be one of the strongest Titans in the MonsterVerse.
A synopsis for the Godzilla vs. Kong sequel confirms that the two are about to face “a world-ending threat so terrifying that neither could survive alone.” Based on what was shown in the teaser trailer for the new movie, that “threat” has a surprising source. The creature shown in the footage appears to be a member of Kong’s MonsterVerse species. Aside from the fact that Kong’s species is supposedly extinct, what makes this reveal so interesting is the fact that Godzilla has already demonstrated his physical superiority to Kong’s kind. Yet somehow, there’s a giant ape in the MonsterVerse strong enough to go toe-to-toe with him and Kong.
Evil Kong’s Blue Eyes Explain His Power Level
A likely explanation for the new villain’s power level can be found in his design. The trailer carefully emphasizes the ape Titan’s blue eyes, a characteristic not shared by Kong. Not only are they a different color from Kong’s, but they glow unnaturally. This creates comparisons to the blue atomic energy that flows within Godzilla’s veins and grants the King of the Monsters his signature atomic breath ability. It would seem, given this connection, that Godzilla vs. Kong 2’s villain possesses Godzilla’s power.
Although this would be a major addition to the lore surrounding Kong’s species, it’s not one that would come without proper setup. Godzilla’s power is the same as the hidden Hollow Earth energy source APEX was after in Godzilla vs. Kong. It was revealed in the movie that the Hollow Earth temple housed a place where they could access this energy, which was how they powered the axes made with Godzilla’s dorsal fins. Now, it appears that at least one Kong found a way to harness the energy source within his own body, not unlike the way it fuels Godzilla.
Evil Kong's Powers Tease The Origin Of The Titan War
In addition to shedding light on how he could possibly rival both of the movie’s titular protagonists, the new ape villain’s blue eyes provide insight into what happened in the Titan War. If it’s true that this monster stole the Hollow Earth power for himself, that could turn out to be the real reason why Godzilla and Kong’s ancestors were fighting in the first place. Exactly how they can use it is unclear, but looking at what Godzilla can do with it, it’s likely that it can drastically increase their destructive potential. That could have motivated Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire’s ape villain to pursue it thousands of years ago, thus prompting a conflict with Godzilla’s kind.
