Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire’s big monster tease breaks all the theories regarding the sequel’s villain. The announcement that the next MonsterVerse installment would be another Godzilla-Kong crossover gave birth to all sorts of ideas pertaining to the villain’s identity. It was understood, of course, that any monster capable of challenging both alpha Titans has to be a force to be reckoned with.

The knowledge that Godzilla and Kong would be the character’s opponents served as the basis for most of the theories about the movie’s plot. Given the MonsterVerse’s connection to Toho’s Godzilla franchise, it made sense that a member of the King of the Monsters’ rogues’ gallery would be the villain. As such, multiple candidates were identified, with Destoroyah, Gigan, SpaceGodzilla, Biollante, and Hedorah all standing out as sensible choices for the role, though the possibility remained that the MonsterVerse would instead opt for another original Titan.

Godzilla vs. Kong 2 Sets Up An Evil Kong As The Next Villain

A new kaiju sits on a throne in the Godzilla vs. Kong 2 teaser.

As the Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire teaser trailer suggests, it’s looking like Godzilla and Kong’s next challenger after Mechagodzilla is an evil Kong. With glowing blue eyes, a slender-armed Kong was shown sitting atop a throne surrounded by Titan bones. By all indications, this creature and whatever minions he may command are the “world-ending threat” described by the sequel’s synopsis. By heading in this direction, the MonsterVerse has successfully circumvented expectations for the sequel’s villain. The rise of an evil Kong certainly wasn’t a foreseeable consequence of Godzilla vs. Kong’s story.

The power level of the Kongs explains why the MonsterVerse was able to keep this twist a surprise for so long. While it has been suspected that there might have been other survivors of the Kong species hidden somewhere in the Hollow Earth, one of them being Godzilla vs. Kong 2’s villain felt unlikely. After all, Godzilla proved his physical superiority over their kind in Godzilla vs. Kong. And with Godzilla and Kong’s combined strength, it seemed only natural that the MonsterVerse would be forced to settle on one of the most powerful Godzilla villains to act as the movie’s main antagonist.

How Can An Evil Kong Fight Godzilla & Kong Together?

Godzilla vs Kong 2 Villain Blue Eyes

Since an evil Kong is such a surprising choice for the sequel’s villain, it’s worth wondering how the MonsterVerse will justify the new ape Titan’s status. Curiously, a hint was seemingly provided in the Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire teaser trailer. His eyes glowed unnaturally with a blue color, which suggests that he possesses the same Hollow Earth energy source harnessed by Godzilla. If that’s true, the villain could be the perfect mix of Godzilla and Kong’s best attributes. Armed with the agility and intelligence of Kong and the raw power of Godzilla, he could be a terrifying villain for the MonsterVerse.
