Warning! Contains manga spoilers for Jujutsu Kaisen!
Summary
- Gojo's return in Jujutsu Kaisen sets up epic battles for the series' climax.
- Sealing Gojo allowed other sorcerers, like Yuji, to grow and develop their potential.
- Gojo likely won't be unsealed in Season 3 as the Culling Game has a lot of chapters to cover.
After over a hundred chapters being sealed away, Gege Akutami is planning on ending Jujutsu Kaisen relatively soon. But the fights his return sets up for the manga's climax promise to be some of the most epic in the series so far.
Chapter 221, translated by John Werry, features Hana finally using her Jacob's Ladder technique to release Gojo from the prison realm that Kenjaku trapped him in. However, instead of releasing Gojo among his allies, Kenjaku set up the box to release Gojo deep under the ocean in a subduction zone, hoping that would slow him down or kill him.
It also let Kenjaku be able to attempt to kill him before he could meet up with his allies if the pressure and water failed. Of course, when Kenjaku does confront Gojo, the sorcerer is completely unharmed and immediately tries to kill the immortal villain. However, Sukuna intervenes and the two briefly clash before deciding to postpone their battle by a month to fulfill prior commitments and deal with personal issues.

Jujutsu Kaisen's Only Way To Bring Gojo Back Will Horrify Fans
The reborn Sukuna will soon become a threat to Kenjaku, but the latter could have a trump card that will horrify Gojo fans.
Why Gojo Needed to Be Sealed in Jujutsu Kaisen
Gojo's Absence Allowed Yuji and the Rest of the Sorcerers to Grow
As Kenjaku himself has stated, Gojo needed to be sealed for him to be able to set his plans into motion, as Gojo was simply too strong and could have easily put an end to things. Kenjaku's grand plan involving the Culling Game and the merger with Tengen would not have been possible without Gojo around and thus Kenjaku planned to seal him away by catching him off guard.
Gojo also needed to be sealed for Yuji and the other sorcerers to shine. Jujutsu Society relied heavily on Gojo, as did his students, and him being removed from the equation finally allowed them to take the lead for a change. With Gojo gone, Yuji was forced to face powerful foes like Mahito and Choso alone. The experience from the Culling Game also allowed Yuji and the other sorcerers to test their abilities against powerful reincarnated sorcerers and cursed spirits while also recruiting new sorcerers like Hakari, Takaba, Higuruma, and Angel to their side.
The immediate effect of Gojo's absence can also be seen in sorcerers like Maki, who awakened her real potential as Toji's successor during her fight against Miyo in the Culling Game as well as Megumi, whose battle against Reggie forced him to use his Cursed Technique in new unique ways. As a result, Yuji, Maki, and the newly recruited sorcerers have managed to hold their own against Sukuna even after Gojo's defeat.
Will Gojo Be Unsealed in Season 3 of Jujutsu Kaisen?
Gojo Likely Won't Return in the Season
While season 3 of Jujutsu Kaisen is already in the works, it is too early to say whether fans will get to see Gojo unsealed in the season. Season 2 ended with Yuta's appearance at the end of the Shibuya Incident Arc, kicking off the Itadori's Extermination Arc, which will then be followed by the Perfect Preparation Arc and lastly The Culling Game Arc.
These three arcs, from chapter 139 until Gojo is unsealed in chapter 221, cover 83 chapters which would make season 3 the longest one yet. Previous seasons of Jujutsu Kaisen have adapted around three to four manga chapters per episode on average, which means it is unlikely that Gojo will be unsealed in season 3 of Jujutsu Kaisen, unless the new season is slotted for more than the usual 24 episodes.
More likely than not, season 3 will end with Sukuna taking over Megumi's body, leaving Gojo to be unsealed in the next season along with the epic Shinjuku Showdown against Sukuna. Still, there is plenty to Jujutsu Kaisen, including the introduction of many new exciting characters, Cursed Techniques, and battles that will ensure fans do not miss Gojo Satoru too much while he's trapped away inside the Prison Realm.
Jujutsu Kaisen is available to read from Manga Plus and Viz Media.
