A new leak suggests that GoldenEye 007 is making its grand and long-awaited return via a new version on Xbox. GoldenEye is one of the most beloved movie tie-ins ever made and is widely regarded as one of the best James Bond games, even with its age. It's a key part of a lot of gamers' childhoods, and if the rumors sparked by this leak are true, it just might be coming back.

At one point, Rare was working on an Xbox 360 remake of GoldenEye. The game was to be incredibly faithful to the original, but ultimately fell apart due to rights issues. Of course, Activision took this opportunity to do a completely different remake of GoldenEye with Daniel Craig replacing Pierce Brosnan as James Bond. It was more akin to the other Bond games that Activision had been publishing to tie-in with Craig's films, but it still received mostly positive reviews from critics. Although it never established the following that the original did, it was accepted by some audiences.

With that said, it would seem as though the beloved game is making a return in its original form. Following some momentum on GoldenEye in 2021, the game's achievements have leaked on True Achievements. The art for the achievements seems to indicate it's a port of the original game and may even be Rare's canceled remake. Exophase has also listed the game for an Xbox One release, but it's unclear if it will be available on other platforms like PlayStation or Nintendo. Wario64 also found some art for the game as well. Although there's no confirmation, the fact that achievements have popped up on Xbox's servers may indicate that the game's reveal and release are imminent.

Fans will likely have to wait a bit for Rare or Xbox to make the official announcement, but it's an exciting prospect nonetheless. The canceled GoldenEye remake had online multiplayer, so it seems likely that this new version will incorporate some sort of online play if it sees the light of day. It's unclear if Rare has done any substantial new work on this remake, as the original version was pretty close to being completed.

It's likely things like resolution, FPS, and maybe online play features have changed to meet the standards of a 2022 release, but it's still probably not going to look like a brand new modern release. Nonetheless, those looking to relive the glory days of the original GoldenEye may finally get the opportunity on modern consoles.
