Good Omens is finally back with its second season, and it was worth the wait as it brought a couple of surprises, especially in Aziraphale (Michael Sheen) and Crowley’s (David Tennant) story. After preventing the apocalypse in Good Omens season 1 and being left alone by Heaven and Hell, Aziraphale and Crowley are back in season 2 with an original story. The angel and the demon team up again when archangel Gabriel (Jon Hamm) suddenly arrives at Aziraphale’s bookshop completely naked and with no memory of who he is, who Aziraphale is, and where they come from.
Meanwhile, Heaven and Hell are looking for Gabriel and make it clear that they will punish those who are caught helping the archangel, so Aziraphale and Crowley do their best to hide Gabriel. At the same time, Aziraphale sets out to discover what really happened to Gabriel, while Crowley tries to cover up the miracle they made for Gabriel by bringing together Nina (the owner of a coffee shop) and Maggie (the owner of a record store). Good Omens season 2 ended with two big twists and a massive cliffhanger, as the leaders of Heaven and Hell had fallen in love and Crowley finally gave in to his feelings, though not with the results he expected.
Crowley & Aziraphale’s Romance Explained – Will They Get Back Together?
As seen in the very first scene of Good Omens season 2, Aziraphale and Crowley have known each other since the beginning of times. The angel and the demon met when Crowley was creating galaxies and he was still an angel. Since then, Crowley and Aziraphale continued to meet at different points in time, forming an unlikely but strong friendship, even though they often disagreed on how to handle specific situations. Good Omens season 2 further explored their relationship, taking viewers back to different points in time to see these two in different adventures together.
These flashbacks showed the deep connection between Aziraphale and Crowley, and how the latter wasn't entirely evil. Aziraphale is the only being who knows Crowley has a good side, but has to keep his image as a demon. Aziraphale brought out the best of Crowley, and Crowley gave Aziraphale a wider perspective on everything, so they complement each other in different ways. Since Good Omens season 1, the romantic tension between Crowley and Aziraphale was obvious, and in season 2, the writers fully embraced it and gave the audience what they had waited for.
In the final episode of Good Omens season 2, Maggie and Nina went to the bookshop to talk to Aziraphale and Crowley, but the angel left to talk to the Metatron and Crowley stayed inside. Maggie and Nina told Crowley that his and Aziraphale’s problem is that they don’t talk about their feelings, and they should be fully honest with each other. This made Crowley realize his real feelings for Aziraphale, and though he struggled to tell him what he felt, he eventually opened his heart and told him he wanted to stay with him on Earth. However, Aziraphale had just been offered the role of supreme archangel of Heaven, which gives him the chance of bringing Crowley with him and make him an angel again.
Crowley refused to go to Heaven and tried to convince Aziraphale to stay, and kissed the angel when he told him he needed him. Aziraphale told Crowley he forgives him, but Crowley replied “don’t bother” and left the bookshop. Good Omens season 2 ended with Aziraphale returning to Heaven with the Metatron and Crowley staying on Earth. Crowley saw Aziraphale enter the elevator to Heaven before driving away. With Crowley and Aziraphale going on separate ways and the latter taking a high-ranking role in Heaven, they won’t be getting back together anytime soon, but there’s always a chance that they will team up again and, hopefully, find a way to make their relationship work.
Aziraphale Is The Supreme Archangel Of Heaven – What It Means For Good Omens S3
The biggest shake-up in Good Omens season 2 involved the leaders of Heaven and Hell: Gabriel and Beelzebub (now played by Shelley Conn). As it turns out, these two fell in love during their meetings on Earth to discuss what to do with the planned Armageddon #2, and unsurprisingly, this made them look like traitors in Heaven and Hell. Beelzebub and Gabriel decided to stay together, which left a spot open in the high rankings of Hell and Heaven. As archangels Michael, Uriel, and Saraqael prepared to punish Aziraphale by erasing him from the Book of Life, the Metatron showed up in human form and sent the archangels back to Heaven.
The Metatron and Aziraphale went to the restaurant across the street to talk, and the former offered the angel the spot of supreme archangel of Heaven now that Gabriel is gone. The Metatron explained that Aziraphale is the only angel who can take the spot thanks to his experience on Earth, his empathy, and more, and being the supreme archangel gives him the freedom to choose who to work with. The Metatron explained to Aziraphale that, if he chose to continue working with Crowley, he would have the power to make Crowley an angel again.
Aziraphale being the supreme archangel of Heaven means that he will now have control over the archangels and the actions of Heaven on Earth in Good Omens season 3, which will be interesting to watch given Heaven’s next big project. The Metatron told Aziraphale that he needed an angel who knows Earth as his next step is the Second Coming, and Aziraphale is the perfect angel for that.
Aziraphale’s Second Coming Project Explained
As mentioned above, the Metatron revealed to Aziraphale that Heaven’s next big step is not a second Armageddon as previously discussed, but the Second Coming. Also known as the Second Advent or the Parousia, the Second Coming is a Christian, Islamic, and Baha’i belief that Jesus will return after his ascension to heaven. This is based on messianic prophecies, and views about the nature of the Second Coming vary in Christianity, and many specific dates have been given for it. The Second Coming makes sense for Good Omens season 3 in of religious themes, as season 1 was all about the coming of the Antichrist and the apocalypse that he would trigger.
Good Omens season 2 wasn’t that focused on religious themes, though some of Aziraphale and Crowley’s flashbacks were related to Biblical stories (such as that of Job), so season 3 going back to these makes sense. The world of Good Omens already met the Antichrist, so now it’s time for a big event from Heaven’s side, and what better than the Second Coming.
Is Crowley Going To Be An Angel Again?
Crowley is a fallen angel, very much like Satan himself, and it’s implied in Good Omens season 2 that he was expelled from Heaven after asking too many questions about Heaven’s plans and designs. Crowley doesn’t really seem bothered by the fact that he used to be an angel and he’s now a demon, and he has learned to embrace and enjoy the perks and freedom that come with being a demon. Crowley made it very clear to Aziraphale that he has no desire to become an angel again, and instead, he prefers to stay on Earth. Crowley’s love for Aziraphale isn’t big enough to make him agree to become an angel again, so it’s unlikely that he will stop being a demon.
Why Gabriel’s Memories Were Erased In Good Omens Season 2
The biggest mystery in Good Omens season 2 was what happened to Gabriel and why he couldn’t anything. The final episode of the season saw Crowley visiting Heaven to take a look at Gabriel’s records, where he, Muriel, and the audience learned what truly happened to him. During a meeting with the archangels and the Metatron, Michael explained their plans for a second Armageddon and the beginning of eternity, but Gabriel didn’t agree with those plans for the final victory of Heaven on Earth. Gabriel didn’t explain his reasons for not ing the second Armageddon, so he was sent to trial.
Michael and the rest decided Gabriel would be demoted (because sending him to Hell again would make Heaven look bad), removed from his office, and would have his memories as Gabriel erased. Gabriel agreed to all this but said he needed to clean his desk, for which he was given a box (the one he was covering himself with when he arrived at the bookshop). Gabriel didn’t have a desk, but he needed time to keep all his memories in a fly that served as a container. Gabriel was one step ahead of the archangels as he didn’t let them erase his memories, and instead, he kept them in a fly that was close to him all the time – and the biggest reason why he couldn’t let Heaven take his memories was his romance with Beelzebub.
Gabriel & Beelzebub’s Unexpected Romance Explained
As mentioned above, the biggest twist in Good Omens season 2 was the romance between Hell’s Beelzebub and Heaven’s Gabriel. When Gabriel’s memories were restored thanks to the fly, it was revealed that he and Beelzebub had been meeting on Earth, and they ended up falling in love. Gabriel and Beelzebub met on Earth as they needed to discuss some important issues and it wasn’t safe to do it on their respective grounds, so Earth was neutral territory. In their first two meetings, Gabriel and Beelzebub agreed not to continue with the second Armageddon, and in their second meeting, they started to bond. Beelzebub mentioned that she liked the song that was playing at the bar (“Everyday” b Buddy Holly), which became their song.
Their third meeting took place in Edinburgh, where they visited the statue of Gabriel in a cemetery before going to The Resurrectionist for drinks. Gabriel changed the jukebox in the pub so it will only play “Everyday”, and in order to give something back to Gabriel, Beelzebub gave him a fly that was a container, and kept it in a box of matches. Gabriel told her he had never received a gift before, and their attraction was clearer than ever at that moment. Back in the present day, Gabriel told Beelzebub he was going to go to her after being demoted but forgot, but they were now together again.
Shax called Beelzebub a traitor and the archangels weren’t pleased with this unexpected romance either, but Beelzebub told them they cooperated with each other equally and that she had found something more important than choosing sides. Shax wanted to take them to Satan for punishment, while Michael wanted them to face celestial punishment, but what Gabriel and Beelzebub wanted was to be together. Crowley suggested they go to Alpha Centauri, to which both sides agreed as long as Gabriel and Beelzebub never return. Beelzebub and Gabriel held hands and disappeared as they sang “Everyday” to each other.
What Happens To Nina & Maggie In Good Omens' Season 2 Finale
Maggie and Nina ended up involved in Aziraphale and Crowley’s mess as in order to cover the miracle they made to keep Gabriel safe, they tried to get them to fall in love with each other. However, Nina was involved in a toxic relationship that eventually ended, and Maggie never stopped showing Nina how much she cared about her. Despite Crowley and Aziraphale’s efforts, Maggie and Nina decided that they couldn’t be together at the moment, mostly because Nina had just broken up with her partner, but they also realized that Aziraphale and Crowley needed to be open with each other about their feelings.
Shax's New Role In Hell Explained
With Crowley being labeled a traitor and Hell deciding to leave him alone on Earth, Hell sent a new representative to Earth: Shax. Shax realized that Aziraphale and Crowley had been helping Gabriel, so she decided to bring an army of demons to Earth and attack the bookshop, but they were all defeated by Aziraphale when he threw his halo at them. Before Beelzebub left with Gabriel, she told Shax that she could be the new Duke of Hell, something that Shax liked a lot. Though it was not confirmed at the end of Good Omens season 2, it’s understood that Shax will take Beelzebub’s place in Hell, making her the new authority figure in the underworld.
Will Good Omens Season 3 Happen?
Good Omens season 2’s finale left the door wide open for a third season, with Aziraphale now taking over Heaven and preparing the Second Coming, Shax taking control of Hell, Muriel being in charge of Aziraphel’s bookshop, and Crowley staying on Earth, heartbroken. However, at the time of writing, Good Omens hasn’t been renewed for a third season, but Neil Gaiman has already shared that he has an idea of what season 3 will be about. Gaiman, who is currently on strike as part of the WGA, shared that he hopes for a third season, but an announcement might be delayed due to the strikes.
