Despite being intended as a miniseries based on a single book, the first season of Good Omens was so successful that Aziraphale and Crowley are returning for a brand-new story beyond Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman's novel in Good Omen's season 2. Initially, Martin Sheen's Aziraphale and David Tennant's Crowley were only expected to feature in a single series, as the source material only covers one story. The show's popularity earned it a second season, which surviving co-writer and showrunner Gaiman has crafted from scratch. Because there was only one book written, the second season is surrounded by mystery, and this has led to Good Omens season 2 updates and news being highly sought after.

Good Omens Season 2 Latest News

The most recent Good Omens season 2 news comes in the form of a first-look video for the season and a brand-new poster. As the original Good Omens season 2 showed, Heaven was searching Jon Hamm's angel Gabriel, who was on Earth with no memories of anything except for that he needed to be close to Aziraphale (now considered a traitor to Heaven). In the new first look, Gabriel sat in Aziraphale's bookshop, naked and covered with a blanket, enjoying a cup of coffee that amazed him to no end. He also revealed he had something important to give to Aziraphale or something terrible would happen, but he couldn't what that thing was.

It is clear that Gabriel had a mission from Heaven, but with his memory gone, there appears to be a massive mission for the second season that Aziraphale and Crowley have to solve - all while hiding their new guest from both Heaven and Hell. There isn't much else in this first look concerning the newcomers to the season, but it does appear that Hamm will supply a lot of laughs along the way, and Aziraphale is as neurotic and jumpy as ever.

As for the new Good Omens season 2 poster, it has a glass of wine (for Crowley) and a cup of coffee (for Aziraphale, with maybe one more for Gabriel), along with the release date for the new season to land on Prime Video.

Good Omens Season 2 Release Date

The Good Omens season 2 release date is July 28, 2023 (via Collider). Good Omens season 2 is set to feature six episodes, just as season 1 did. Director Douglas McKinnon shared on Twitter that the Good Omens season 2 production was completed in March 2022. July 28th is the premiere date for the season and will be when episode one is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video, and following that, the rest of the Good Omens season 2 episodes will be released weekly.

Good Omens season 2 was confirmed in June 2021, and that came as a surprise to even the biggest of fans. Good Omens isn't a series of books. It was, and always intended to be, a standalone novel, telling a single complete story in one volume. As such the show was always promoted as a miniseries, so when the sixth and final episode of Good Omens season 1 wrapped, that was believed to be the end of it. The story from the novel the show is based on has been completed, so there are a lot of questions surrounding what the Good Omens season 2 plot will be.

While most details regarding Good Omens season 2 have been kept secret, information regarding the cast and their characters is plentiful. Notable absences include Benedict Cumberbatch, s McDormand, and Adria Arjona, who have confirmed that they will not be reprising their roles this season. Michael Sheen and David Tennant will be starring as Aziraphale and Crowley, with their antics being the central feature of the season. Alongside them, Jon Hamm will be returning as the angel Gabriel, Derek Jacobi will return as Metatron and several others will be returning for minor roles and cameos.

Several actors will be returning as different characters in Good Omens season 2, including Nina Sosanya and Maggie Service, both of whom previously played nuns from the Chattering Order of St Beryl. Both will now be playing characters named after themselves. Liz Carr, Doon Mackichan, Gloria Obianyo, and Miranda Richardson will also be taking on new roles in the second season. In addition to the returning cast, the Good Omens season 2 cast will include newcomers Shelley Conn, Tim Downie, Pete Firman, Alex Norton, Andi Osho, Dame Siân Phillips, and Quelin Sepulveda.

An interesting announcement regarding Good Omens season 2 also came in the form of casting. Both comments about Jon Hamm's role in Good Omens season 2.

"There are things that I have done to Jon Hamm, or have other people do, or that have happened to Jon Hamm in the second season of Good Omens that while I’m not at liberty to actually reveal what they are, I will say that I’m in many ways glad he’s not sitting opposite me."

Good Omens Season 2 Story Details

Since Good Omens was intended as a limited series, it didn't leave open many plot threads for the Good Omens season 2 story. The exception to this is a brief conversation between Crowley and Aziraphale near the end of Good Omens Season 1, Episode 6, "The Very Last Day Of The Rest Of Their Lives." "For my money, the really big one is all of us against all of them." Crowley postulates, to which a shocked Aziraphale responds "What? Heaven and Hell against... humanity?"

Crowley suggested that the next big crisis would position all supernaturals — angels and demons — against humans, and that could very well be a future plot line for the series. After all, Gaiman has shared (via YouTube) that the next season would involve "a lot more heaven and a lot more hell," as well as focusing on romance and Jane Austen. That also makes sense given that the trailer hints at an all-out war when Gabriel pays a visit.

While fans knew what to expect out of Good Omens, there isn't a clear guideline for the inspiration going forward, and that's why it's based on a brand new story outside of the Good Omens book. Apparently, Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett sketched out a sequel titled 668 — The Neighbor of the Beast, but their individual successes prevented them from drafting it. When asked about those original ideas, Gaiman shared (via Twitter), "We had a whole sequel plotted, but that's not Season 2. It will be Season 3 if we get there."

With that on the back burner, Gaiman described (via Twitter) Good Omens season 2 as "quiet and gentle and romantic" instead. This romance is likely to come from fan favorites Crowley and Aziraphale, but it may also come from two new cosmic enemies: Quelin Sepulveda's angel Muriel and Miranda Richardson's demon Shax. Another possible pairing for romance may be shopkeepers Maggie and Nina, who make up the merchant community around Aziraphale's bookshop. Whichever characters stumble their way into love, audiences can expect the unique blend of emotion, drama, and philosophy that were so present in the novel and first season.

There have also been major Good Omens story leaks. A recent promotional clip was released by Amazon Prime Video, which gave away a massive spoiler for the season. The clip has since been taken down, but it calls into question why the studio decided to it in the first place. What's more unfortunate is that it was revealed to fans that weren't even digging for spoilers and had simply clicked on what was thought to be another teaser. Now, screenshots of the clip are unsurprisingly circulating online.

However, the person who is most distraught by the Good Omens season 2 leaks is the creator of God Omens himself, Neil Gaiman. Gaiman explained, "I've heard what's happened and I'm heartbroken that there are leaks, and that they happened like this." The creator also hinted that it might not have happened if it wasn't for the WGA 2023 writers' strike, adding, "I'm on strike and not able to oversee every step of the promotion in the way that I normally would be, and because I'm on strike people aren't running things by me in the way that they normally would."

Good Omens Season 2 Trailer

The first trailer for Good Omens season 2 has now arrived after what felt like a long wait to many fans eagerly discussing the series online. Those who attended NYCC 2022 did see a brief teaser for the series, but the clip revealed no plot details, only giving audiences a glimpse of Crowley and Aziraphale, alongside new characters Nina and Muriel. However, a trailer has finally been released, and it teases a much more ambitious story than season 1. It isn't obvious from the trailer how much time has ed in the universe since the first seasons, but given how different Crowley looks, it could be a long time, and it's likely close to the four-year gap between the actual seasons.

The Good Omens season 2 trailer gives a look at several of the returning characters, including the fan-favorite character Gabriel (Hamm), the leader of the forces of Heaven, who asks Aziraphale if "everything would be better if you were just near one particular person." The trailer also makes it clear that Aziraphale and Crowley haven't remained in touch since the first season, as the first scene marks their reunion. Nevertheless, it's a happy reunion in the Good Omens season 2 trailer, as Aziraphale couldn't be more excited to see his evil friend.
