One of the most beloved Elseworlds stories was Brian Augustyn and Mike Mignola's Gotham By Gaslight, a story set in the Victorian era that saw a Batman variant hunting down Jack the Ripper. Though Gotham by Gaslight was a one-shot, Augustyn returned to pen a sequel, Batman: Master of the Future.

At New York Comic Con, DC Comics revealed its Elseworlds branding will be returning in 2024, and one story featured in its new lineup is Andy Diggle and Leandro Fernandez's Gotham by Gaslight: The Kryptonian Age. The new 12-issue maxiseries won't just return fans to Earth-19. It will expand beyond the 19th century Gotham's boundaries and see the rest of DC's Victorian Age heroes assemble to create a new Justice League. The world is under siege from an unknown threat, and only the greatest heroes can put a stop to it. But their adventure will reveal the Earth's secret connection to Krypton.

DC Comics has returned to the Gotham by Gaslight world a few times over the years, often during its many Crisis events. These new glimpses revealed other heroes on Earth-19 that weren't present in the original story such as Daniel Garett's Blue Beetle or the Victorian Flash, the Accelerated Man. But Gotham by Gaslight: The Kryptonian Age is the first true-blue sequel since Batman: Master of the Future and the first to bring the Justice League to Earth-19. Not only is this an interesting way to build on the fan-favorite Elseworlds universe, but it also opens up the possibility of other Victorian Age DC reinventions.

Gotham by Gaslight is only one of DC's many worlds the Elseworlds' line has explored, but it remains a beloved story to this day. There's a lot of storytelling potential beyond a 19th century Batman when one puts their mind to it. What does the Victorian Legion of Doom look like? And what is this world's equivalent to the Suicide Squad? Granted, there's no guarantee this new maxiseries will explore these concepts. But anything is possible now that DC is bringing Earth-19 back with this unexpected sequel story.

Fans eager to see the Victorian Justice League will get their chance when Gotham By Gaslight: The Kryptonian Age releases in 2024.
