In a preview for Green Lantern: War Journal #9 by Phillip Kennedy Johnson and Montos, Shepherd's consultation with the book proves fruitless. That is, until he asks the tome to reveal the first mention of the Darkstars. The Book begins to tell Shepherd a story about the Guardians of the Universe's ancestors.
Ancient Maltusians traveled the universe and found a monument built with Genesis, the crystalized blood of an Old God. The Maltusians took this resource for themselves, eventually leading to a powerful light growing from the monument, a body that would eventually become the Dark Star of the Fenn.
The Green Lanterns' Rivals Were Created by Robbing a Monument to Olgrun
The Darkstars are an interstellar law enforcement organization who were created by the Controllers, an evolutionary offshoot of the Maltusians. Several Maltuisans banded together to form the Guardians of the Universe and created numerous peacekeeping armies such as the Manhunters and the Green Lantern Corps. But after the Corps was destroyed by Hal Jordan, the Controllers jumped at the opportunity to fill the void with their own army: The Darkstars. The Darkstars didn't have Power Rings, but they did have Exo-Mantles, powerful suits of armor that gave the soldiers a wide range of special abilities.
The beings who would become the Controllers were desperate to control the universe, so it comes as no surprise that the ancient Maltusians defiled the monument to steal its Genesis. Unfortunately, this desecration of Olgrun's monument only led to the creation of the Dark Star of the Fenn, a cosmic portal through which Olgrun's lingering spirit has been using to send out his undead army, the Radiant Dead. The ultimate irony is that the Controllers wanted to create a force to defend the universe. Instead, the Green Lantern rivals may have unwittingly invited its destruction.
Olgrun is Attacking the DC Universe and It's All the Darkstars' Fault
Unfortunately, the damage the Maltusians did was done eons ago and the Dark Star of the Fenn has only grown allowing more of Olgrun's vile power through. Worse, the Controllers are nowhere to be found and their Darkstars project has long been dismantled. The Guardians of the Universe are absolutely not saints and they've made questionable decisions in their time with the Green Lantern Corps. But the Controllers' earliest attempts at building a rival have only allowed for a mad old God to return and create a threat that only the strongest Green Lantern could potentially stop.
