DC Comics has just named the ultimate Red Lantern in Green Lantern lore (though it's not who fans might think of first). Initially, it's easy to assume that Atrocitus, the leader of the rage-filled Red Lantern Corps, would be their most powerful member. However, a new preview confirms there's someone who feels even more rage than the Corps' sinister founder.

In the new preview for Thaaros and the United Planets conflict. Following the destruction of their Central Power Battery, several Red Lanterns immediately died (Red Lanterns lose their hearts when they take the ring, fueled only by the red light of rage). The Red Lanterns who remained were enslaved, but were ultimately freed thanks to the unparalleled rage of Zilius Zox.

With the reveal that Zilius Zox is the only thing keeping what remains of his corps alive, it's pretty easy to make the argument that he's become the most powerful Red Lantern of all time in the DC Universe.

DC Comics' Newest "Fractal Lantern"

An original member of the Red Lanterns and one of Atrocitus' first recruits, Zilius Zox is hard to forget. An incredibly round ball of unbridled alien rage, Zox does bear a resemblance to Marvel's MODOK. Now, he's become the savior of the entire Red Lantern Corps.

After the few Red Lanterns who survived the Central Power Battery's destruction were captured by slave traders, Zilius Zox felt so much rage that he became a new Fractal Lantern, beings who suddenly manifest massive surges of light from the now-wild Emotional Spectrum, with no means of containing it via Central Power Batteries. In the case of the red light of rage, this would mean that Zox would build up so much power that he'd eventually explode. Instead, Atrocitus used Zilius to take over the slave trader's ship, siphoning Zox's power to keep the remaining Red Lanterns alive and power the ship using Nth metal.

In the first issue of this new DC series, the Green Lantern Corps helped a different Fractal Lantern who manifested the yellow light of fear. They then recruited her as a new Green Lantern to grow their own diminished ranks. As a result, one has to wonder if the same will happen to Zilius Zox now that he's also a Fractal Lantern. However, one would assume that the Red Lantern Corps would need to find some other means of survival before that happens, as they currently need Zox and his impressive new depths of rage just to live.
