The Lantern Corps' abilities all stem from emotions, and that continues to hold true for this Sorrow Lantern. Nathan acquired his power ring in the midst of sorrow, so his powers allow him to share that sorrow with those around him. He's able to reduce Dove to tears with his mere presence, and he goes on to do the same to Star Sapphire. The sorrow that infects her is so overwhelming that it renders her incapable of fighting back, proving that Sorrow Lantern is a true force to be reckoned with now that he can weaponize his misery.

Nathan became a Sorrow Lantern after Carol left him at the altar to be with Hal Jordan. While Star Sapphire is fueled by love, Nathan has sworn off love because of her. Through his heartbreak, Sorrow Lantern forces his emotions onto Star Sapphire so that she can feel the same sorrow she inflicted on him. Star Sapphire's love for Hal is stronger, though, and she overpowers Sorrow Lantern with that love. The fact that a broken heart led to the birth of a new Lantern Corps shows that the Emotional Spectrum is in deep disarray, which Star Sapphire picks up on.

The DC Universe's vast cosmos is home to many different Lantern Corps, including but not limited to Lord Premier Thaaros seized control over the United Planets, he's destroyed the Central Power Battery for each of the other Lantern Corps to ensure that his Green Lantern Corps reigns supreme. It's no coincidence that a Lantern powered by sorrow has now arisen, born from the Emotional Spectrum's suffering.

The Sorrow Lantern is not the only sign of the Emotional Spectrum's peril. In Green Lantern #13, Thaaros' heinous actions. Thanks to him, the damaged Emotional Spectrum has produced a dangerous enemy that puts both Green Lantern and Star Sapphire at risk.

As Sorrow Lantern flees from his showdown with Star Sapphire, he claims that he will make it so she never loves again. Nathan is bitter about Star Sapphire choosing Green Lantern because he believes that he is the "nice guy" who deserves her, while Hal constantly lets her down. Carol's love for Hal may seem illogical from an outsider's perspective, but love defies logic. She loves Hal enough to choose him over the more practical option. Nathan's inability to understand her point of view leads him down a dark path to tear Green Lantern and Star Sapphire apart.
Nathan's exact plans are unclear as he flies off with the promise of ending Star Sapphire's love, but this certainly won't be the last readers see of the new Lantern Corps.
Now that Sorrow Lantern has begun his quest for revenge against Green Lantern and Star Sapphire, their budding romance hangs in the balance. Hal has only just reignited his relationship with Carol, and now the two of them must fight to preserve it.
